Pew Poll Stinks for Bush, Repubs

Why Americans trust Repubs more on "security" and "foreign policy" after five years of Bush, though, is WAY beyond my powers to comprehend.

I can sure understand why most of the people polled have low opinions of ALL politicians. SO DO I! I'm hoping the Dems see this and take advantage of a GIFT staring them in the face!!!!

That response among the people is a pretty old one, dating back to the close of the Viet Nam era: it has the same sort of "brand loyalty" built up over decades as Campbell's Soup or McDonald's. Elements on the left pressing lines that U.S. policies "justify" attacks against the U.S., or even that the "terrorist" organizations are really directed by the economic and political elite of the U.S. itself, certainly do not help matters. Most of our electorate views such ideas as at best naive and nonesensical, and because the people do view the Democrats as the party of the left, such things tend to rub off on it in the popular mind.

I would wonder why you are here on DU if this is what you believe..and a Moderator..too!

Are you just playing the part of the ultimate "Cynical DU'er" in the way that Gore Vidal portrays nothing good about American Politics or...are you pushing some DLC Crap?

Open a political discussion with a stranger by stating that the U.S. had it coming on September 11, or that those attacks were carried out by operatives of the present regime, and observe the result. It is unlikely to be pleasant, and unlikely to result in the person saying "That makes me want to vote for a Democrat."

Like any other form of marketing, political lines must take into account the tastes and predispositions of the target audience. Those that do not are certain to fail. It is a fact that the bulk of the electorate views the Democratic Party as incompetent in matters of national defense, and has for many years. Whether that perception is accurate or not is quite beside the point that it is prevelant, and like any prevelant factor in a situation, cannot be ignored in analysis. My own view is that it is a foolish sentiment, but that too is beside the point. The point is that the sentiment exists, and must be changed if the left is to make any electoral progress.

Similarly, while some of us here are of the opinion that the Democratic Party is centerist, or interchangeable with Republicans, and in short, nowhere near left enough, the general run of the electorate views the Democratic party as the party of the left in national politics. Thus, just about any leftist activity blurs in the popular mind with the Democratic Party, and of course, there is a powerful propaganda apparrat dedicated to aggrevating this tendency, by such figures of speech as "the Michael Moore wing of the Democratic party" and similar formulations floated on the media breeze.

I guess his latest PR stunts aren't working.
