Baghdad anger at Bush's undiplomatic palace

Daniel McGrory, Baghdad
May 04, 2006

THE question puzzles and enrages a city: how is it that the Americans cannot keep the electricity running in Baghdad for more than a couple of hours a day, yet still manage to build the biggest embassy on earth?

Irritation grows as residents deprived of airconditioning and running water three years after the US-led invasion watch the massive US embassy they call "George W's palace" rising from the banks of the Tigris.

In the pavement cafes, people moan that the structure is bigger than anything Saddam Hussein built. They are not impressed by the architects' claims that it will be visible from space and cover an area larger than Vatican City. They are more interested in knowing whether the US State Department paid for the prime real estate or simply took it.

While families suffer electricity cuts, queue all day to fuel their cars and wait for water pipes to be connected, the US mission, due to open in June next year, will have its own power and water plants to cater for a population the size of a small town.

The design of the compound is supposed to be a secret, but you cannot hide the concrete contours of the 21 buildings that are taking shape.

2. Why can Americans do that?
Ask New Orleans if Bush cares if the little people have electricity or not!

5. This "Embassy" complex will be seen from space...

This type of ambition is unconcerned with the likes of New Orleans, or the Iraqi people.

4. Yet Dems in House & Senate continue
to support US presence in Iraq....they do nothing to stop this immoral building project.

Sickening.

6. Sickening is too small a word...

There is no thesaurus comprehensive enough to contain the many synonyms to how sickening this is.

7. Technically there are a few Democrats opposing it now
but look how far along this building project is, why are they starting to talk about it now? It's not as if they didn't know.

Sheer madness.

8. Where's the friggin' press???

Why do average Americans have to smoke this stuff out in the blogosphere?

I know it's hard for "journalists" to get access to *; but, when is the dam going to break? Where are today's Woodwards & Bernsteins?

C'mon ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN et. al. -- got balls??? (or are you "journalists" so paralyzed by the thought of losing your access & jobs that you no longer care about reporting facts?)

People used to respect the press because it asked the toughest questions.

I guess you've gotten lazy, because you can keep you're access & jobs by not making waves. Sleep well knowing that a silent press is betrayal to a true democracy. Pardon me while I vomit.

10. The building of this Colonial Palace has been..
known for many months. It has been reported on DU many times. It will be built and the US will remain in Iraq for centuries.

13. That's not the point...

Outrage now trumps outrage then. The serial violations of our Constitution must end now!!!

12. You mean something like, "The Long War"...

How likely are these characters going to willingly give up power -- regardless of election results?

16. "regardless of election results" - that's what I'm concerned about........
...and what most people are not focusing on enough. We've had three very questionable elections in a row now:banghead: and as downright mean and underhanded this bunch is I just can't see them giving up power all of a sudden. I sense something is in the works and I don't mean just a conveniently timed "terra attack", although that may well be part of it.

15. The complete lack
of media attention on this is astounding and the perfect example of what is wrong with whats going on here. Look at this palace and then look at New Orleans, it is absolutely disgusting.

20. That's because they have the immigration distraction working overtime.
Look how much press the immigration debacle is getting, and compare it to how much coverage stuff like this gets.

Hell compare it to how much coverage the war protests got.

18. They are also importing labor from other countries to build it.
Edited on Fri May-05-06 09:27 AM by tjwash
The Iraqi people are not even getting the benefits that the job of building it is creating.

At least Hussein, as reprehensible a person as he was, employed his own country's people to build his palaces.
