74. And NOW we know why a right wing shill came out early this morning
to make a big deal out of the Capitol Police Supervisor's obviously reasoned and researched decision not to arrest Patrick Kennedy, but instead issue him three citations. Gobble up that newstime!

On the bright side, Paddy's likely happy...it'll take some of the heat off him.

167. new CIA director will be handpicked by Negroponte...says Russert
WH sources. Negroponte and Bolten have been talking to Goss for weeks. Goss has made the changes, and a "healer" (Russert's word) now needs to come in. This person will be handpicked by Negroponte, and will be announced early next week.

MSNBC reporting turmoil in Negroponte-Goss relationship.

Goss: Claims I Partied With Wilkes Are "Flatly Untrue," "Horribly Irresponsible"

By Justin Rood - April 28, 2006, 4:22 PM

I called the CIA this morning to get their reaction to Ken Silverstein's piece in Harper's that seems to put Goss in the poker-and-more parties thrown by Brent Wilkes. The parties were held in the Watergate and Westin Grand hotels -- and a third hotel, I'm hearing, which hasn't been reported yet -- as well as at the house of Kyle "Dusty" Foggo, a longtime friend of Wilkes' who is now #3 at the CIA.

After a long series of off-the-record phone calls with CIA spokespeople, I was finally given an on-the-record comment -- about Goss. Speaking on behalf of the director, CIA spokeswoman Jennifer Millerwise Dyck said, "This is horribly irresponsible. He hasn't even been to the Watergate in decades."

When I asked if Goss had attended Wilkes' parties at the Westin or other locations, Millerwise Dyck repeated the denial. "It's horribly irresponsible. Flatly untrue."

197. Quid pro quo
They do it in exchange for support on a bill sending money to their respective states. Since the Repubes vote in lockstep and have the majority, it was a done deal already so the Dems who go along with it get something in return. In essence they're providing political cover for a vote that wouldn't change the eventual outcome while getting something for the folks back home.

105. Goss was head of the House Intel Committee then
On September 25, 2003, Goss's committee blamed the CIA for providing faulty information on Iraqi WMD's: http://www.globalpolicy.org/security/issues/iraq/justify/2003/0928probers.htm

On September 26, 2003, the CIA asked the Justice Department to investigate the Plame leak.

<snip>
This Justin Rood post from TPMmuckraker has quotes from Reps. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) and Jerry Lewis (R-CA) denying that they partied with Wilkes. And here's the follow-up piece from the Journal in which the CIA concedes that Agency #3 man Dusty Foggo did party with Wilkes but didn't stick around for the hookers to show up.
</snip>

If Foggo also resigns, then we'll know Goss's resignation IS because of Hookergate!

That is what they were trained to do, after all.

Maybe, a foreign intel agency was originally running this as a blackmail and influence operation, but was persuaded to hand the operation over after Franklin was busted?

Just think of all the interesting possibilities.

confirmed:

Statement on Senate Confirmation of Porter Goss

I am very pleased that a strong bipartisan majority in the U.S. Senate today voted to confirm Porter Goss as the next Director of Central Intelligence. Porter Goss is a leader with strong experience in intelligence and in the fight against terrorism. He is the right man to take on the essential mission of leading the CIA at this critical moment in our Nation's history as we face the challenges and the dangerous threats of this century. I look forward to his counsel as we implement intelligence reform, including the recommendations of the 9-11 Commission.

Former director of CIA on CNN obviously being very careful and measuring his words. SOMETHING is behind this, if not prostitutes or bribery. Others channels are the same. Oops, now CNN is back to Kennedy.

122. I agree. Nobody wants to be the first to say it - prostitution and
bribery scandal. Not to mention further proof of *'s utter incompetence because he just appointed the guy a year ago. They knew about this a year ago. And if they didn't know about hooker/poker parties regularly being thrown at the most famous hotel in DC by their Republican pals, then they are imcompetent.

tell them to be honest, avoid scandel, listen to their constituents, avoid loggyists and keep their genitals in their pants/skirts. Other than that, they're not going to need an astounding unified message (just the basics: healthcare for all,restore the middleclass, no more outsourcing jobs, border/port security, stop tax breaks to the rich, etc...standard progressive good stuff).

I wasn't aware of his connection to the scandal but I was thinking this is more along the lines of what Ari Fleischer did before the shit hit the fan over Iraq and the Plame leak. This seems to be much more abrupt though, so I'm wondering what's coming up on the horizon.

141. Bloomberg and CNBC;
Have the same crap; That Goss ran the CIA ably and that Goss says that the CIA is running even-keeled. Lol, that term is apt as Goss will have nothing to do but sail his boat around and become self-important. As a side note, bloomberg reported after the above story that someone reported that Kennedy's crash was alcohol induced and that they 'were right on top of the story.'

http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/05/05/goss.resignation/index.html

Quote
There have been weeks-long policy disputes between Goss and John Negroponte, the director of national intelligence, over the future of the CIA, sources who were close to the discussions told CNN.

According to sources, Negroponte's decision to transfer certain functions from the CIA to his office were fiercely resisted by Goss, who believe the moves would diminish the agency's power and ability to function

After the White House sided with Negroponte and his deputy, Gen. Michael Hayden, it was a mutual decision that Goss would resign, the sources said.

"Porter Goss is standing up for the CIA," one intelligence source told CNN. "He believes the Central Intelligence Agency should be just that: central."
--
Former CIA Director Stansfield Turner told CNN that Goss may have resigned because he was passed over for the position of director of national intelligence, which went to Negroponte.

--
Surely there's more to it than that!!!

184. Neither of them explain the suddenness.
Especially not the latter one - you'd think that he would have resigned earlier, if that was the reason. And it sounds rather petty and childish, even for this bunch.

185. Then why the "effective immediately" resignation?
If you're resigning as a protest, you don't leave in a huff over a thing like that.

He was pushed. Maybe for pre-emptive damage control because Goss will be named in Hookergate.

And Bunnypants can't afford any more scandals so close to him.

I call bullshit on the story.
