Poll question: Do your parents or your family know that you Post at DU?
Edited on Fri May-05-06 03:54 PM by Up2Late
Do your parents or your family know that you Post at DU?

Have you or would you ever tell them your DU handle?

If you are anything like me, I end up telling my Mother and Father about a lot of things I read and learn here at DU, but I don't know if I would want her to or my Dad reading and commenting or correcting the things I post here.

Not that what I post here is unusual or bad, but it would just feel weird if I knew my Mother was here, you know what I mean?

I am over 40 and don't bother to share stuff like that. Besides, Mom says she spends all day on a computer at work and doesn't want to see the things when she gets home.

I read the interesting posts to Hubby, since the laptop is in the dining room (for streaming radio use).

13. No, they are diehard repubs who are not terribly computer literate
and would not understand why I spend so much time on the Internet, let alone on DU.

They know of my political views, as I have on occasion (gently) tried to explain why current events are unfolding contrary to the propaganda put forth by the corporate media.

Sadly, they still support * (although they are quite secular and have not attended church in many years).

They have swallowed the corporate media BS hook, line, and fishing boat and in general refuse to believe information from any other source (i.e. the Internet).

I still have a good relationship with them, however - we just don't discuss politics very often.

14. I'm not concerned that my mother would find any of my posts
Even though she knows I post on here. This is the woman who seriously thought her email was down for three weeks and didn't want me to look at it (because I "might break it more", even though I'm good at troubleshooting).

You want to know why her email was "broken?"

She didn't know how to get to work the web browser to get to it online and she didn't know she had to click on "Mail" to open the "Mail" program. She thought that it was "on" if she saw the "picture."

So no, I'm not really concerned. As for my stepdad, I trust him enough to not pry into my internet life. My mother couldn't be trusted as far as you could throw her.

23. The best part is...
she doesn't understand why my stepdad won't hire her for his company...for a position that would require her to work on a computer all day. Then again, this is the same woman that wants to buy the acreage next to the house so she can get a horsey. Yup, it's bizarro land when it comes to dealing with her.

16. My wife is paranoid about web sites, and she has good reason
She is suspect of posting on web sites because both her sister and my brother divorced their spouses to live with people they met on line. Therefore, I simply don't mention that I actually post here.
She knows that I visit the web site but for the most part does not question what I do, I never post while she is around. I am not trying to hide it from her we simply don't mention it so as not to get her fears up for nothing.
I think she knows that she has nothing to worry about but just the same I am not going to get her upset about it.

27. Spell check /?
Could also be voice command.Sometimes people studder, I have never had a problem conversing with people that have speech impediments. Some people have a obsessive compulsive fixation with finding fault with that which they cannot except or that which may be beyond them .Some people are fixed on perfect punctuation rather than content- spell check. Some people do not write much or find a problem with writing because they have been taunted in their past in some cases by teachers because perhaps there was no spell check. Some professors at the universitys may be inclined to capture the content rather than grammer errors. When it,s that good just keep writing is what they say. Content, write it say it ,what ever it takes.,anyway you can.

I keep my handle secret because on another board I gave my name (causally) to my boyfriend and then he was reading stuff he shouldn't have been. It creeped me out to realize he was all the time and behind my back getting so much stuff off the internet about me, was kind of stalkerish. :yoiks:

29. They know, and my dad has read my posts, so they know my handle
There are some things I have shared with DU that I would prefer to protect my parents from, for their own peace of mind, but if they come looking for it, there's nothing I can do about it. They know I am a big ol' liberal, so they probably won't be too surprised!

I prefer not to talk politics with my mostly-conservative family members anyway. They won't convince me, I won't convince them, and no good will come of it.

35. Since I Haven't Lived With My Parents Since I Was A Kid
and my Mother is dead.

I'm thinking that this thread either proves that I'm old?

Or that a lot of people really care what their parents think about what they do or don't post or whether they post on web sites.

My Dad is a liberal.

I've sent him a lot of news items I've found here, but "where" I found them isn't really an issue.

Strange thread

39. I'm too old to report to my Mom, but I tell everyone I know to join
this group. Family, friends and I send (real)news to internet friends. My husband gets a full report of the day's posts after he eats dinner every night. Some days, like today, I couldn't wait and told him about everything that happened while he ate.

I tell them all they're being told lies on the TEEVEE and they need to get their :kick: 's on this forum and read the truth.

I'm told, I'm a little outspoken and I am old enough not to care what the hell anyone else thinks.

40. Since I'm a 34 year old married woman
my parents don't know much of what I do late at nights, whether I am online or watching dirty movies. ;)

Seriously, though, my husband knows that I come here to read up. He reads over my shoulder sometimes, but he's not particularly active in the blogosphere. Nobody else really knows that I come here, but my online activity is not usually the source of my conversations with family or friends.

But I still don't think I want her reading everything I post here, it's just too creepy.

Plus she worries that if I get to carried away with the hole "Freedom of Speech" thing, the Government is going to come looking for me. :hide:

She's always been kind of a worry-wort (tells me about how it was "...during 'The Depression'."

42. I hear you...
I don't think about my parents at all (except for this topic) when I post here on DU. I never thought about whether I'd want them to know or not that I post here. Since they are borderline Republicans (who hate Bush... but they are Republicans because they hate all the New Jersey Democrats, which is where they are from), they probably would be annoyed at this site in general. (Though they'd cheer on the Bush bashing.)

But, as I said, my husband does know I post here, and he's the one I live with. I don't feel like I need to HIDE it from anybody, I just don't talk about online posting when I am not doing it.

43. Screen name is my goal, even if I'm one little person, my drop in
the bucket is added to each of yours until we get it done. I feel DU is important to our future and tell my family (especially kids) what I learn here so they know the importance of checking and re-checking information that is just fed to them on the news. I have no problem with them knowing my screen name.
