WP's Dana Priest on Goss: You'll have to wait for tomorrow's paper.
From War and Piece, by way of Atrios:

http://www.warandpiece.com/blogdirs/004090.html

From a reader: "Dana Priest is on MSNBC right now saying we'll have to wait for tomorrow's paper to find out why he resigned. The Post must have called him for comment on a story running tomorrow about his involvement with Brent Wilkes."

I'm with Atrios... I'll be obsessively refreshing the Washington Post page starting around 10:00 tonight. I wonder if they really do have the scoop?

1. DANA is the reporter who wrapped up the story that Mary McCarthy
was accused of leaking, and Porter wanted DANA's head on a plate for it in addition to Mary's.

Revenge, dish best served cold. Whatcha wanna bet Dana got help from "friends of Mary" in putting her latest effort together????

The rumors of PICTURES are delicious: http://harpers.org/sb-red-lights-on-capitol-hill.html

As to the festivities themselves, I hear that party nights began early with poker games (see Clarification, below) and degenerated into what the source described as a "frat party" scene—real bacchanals. Apparently photographs were taken, and investigators are anxiously procuring copies. My heart beats faster in fevered anticipation.

2. So, do you think Dana has the story wrapped up, so she called...
... Porter Goss for a comment earlier this week? Is that what prompted this abrupt resignation, that the entire thing was about to blow up in the Washington Post?

Ohhhh I can't wait to read that story!

6. Yes, he is. But I'm talking about Dana Priest, a woman.
She's the one with tomorrow's WP byline.

8. Whoops. My bad!!!
Milbank also covers politics for the Post, and my Mexican-food-addled brain apparently fritzed out on me when I saw "Dana" and "WP" in the same sentence.

4. ANDREA MITCHELL just broke that GOSS WAS FIRED
...by NEGROPONTE. That morale sucked, nothing worked, they hated his political aides who purged top CIA experts, and it was a total mess.

9. Andrea Mitchell is a fool.
She's gotten it wrong before. This is the same story Tim Russert "broke" earlier today... in other words, it's the White House line.

For now. Because it really doesn't wash.... if this had been in the works for some time, an abrupt resignation that took the entire Washington press corps off guard would not have been necessary. They would have had time to find a successor, come up with a story, etc.

Something happened this week, something big, and Goss' hand was forced.

Now, I don't doubt that Negroponte told him to get out; the "why" is the story.

Maybe we'll know more when Dana Priest's story comes out. :-)

They're all saying he got the axe, fond farewell in the Oval notwithstanding....

Edited on Fri May-05-06 04:10 PM by VolcanoJen
I respect Pincus, and he seems to say that's what Dana's story is about, too.

But today? Something deeper is afoot.

15. THey're quoting Josh Bolton, who apparently said Porter
was NOT a team player.

Apparently his abrasive manner was like poking holes in the plumbing....caused more leaks than you could shake a stick at!

Who knows? Maybe they were waiting for a distracting lead story, to slide it in under the wire.

Maybe Mary McCarthy has filed for wrongful termination?????

17. So it's an after-the-fact spin job.
It might hold up over the weekend.

But not much longer after that. Reporters are sniffing all around the Watergate and that limo company.

21. Well, the "Bush's personal CIA pick has been FIRED" is EVERYWHERE
So really, the reasons are important, but the fact that the Monkey's personal choice is gone so soon is also a real story...

22. I agree for the reasons you both stated
This is too sudden. As he said they would have finessed significant differences between Negroponte and him. The announcement would not have been this sudden. What does Dana Priest know??

23. One of the MSNBC pundits did make a curious point, though.
I'm not sure who he was, but he opined that if Goss was resigning over an upcoming hooker scandal, they wouldn't have exposed the President that way, by having him sit with Goss in the Oval, looking all chatty and nicey-nice.

That is an interesting point. Of course, they're not good at PR lately, and they're grossly incompetent to boot. :-)

32. Here's why he WOULD..
*² DID handpick him, and sfter he had "cleared all the brush" for him, *² put in Negroponte to OVERSEE what Goss was doing..

These guys get petty..Goss had a pretty sweet deal going in his congressional life, and he "gave it up" to serve *². and for that he got Negroponte as a boss, second-guessing everything he did..

and then there's the hooker angle too..

Pass the popcorn :)

Edited on Fri May-05-06 04:29 PM by rainbow4321
an old friend in the Congress".... (allegedly, of course) and word got around about it.

Could fit into hookergate, I guess, somehow.

Now if one of them would just give (or admit to having given) chimp a blowjob, impeachment proceedings could be started.

That's been the rumor from the very first day that Porter Goss took over. And isn't Negroponte his immediate supervisor?
