31. I never EVER thought I'd find the subject of Patton at all interesting.
But it was a great presentation. Excellent questions from the audience, such as how would Patton deal with Iraq, and what would Patton have done if he weren't a General. There were a lot of whimsical questions, believe it or not, and a lot of creative answers to these. Quite a bit of humor and irony were introduced by the author and Wes Clark, in reference to this very serious man. You don't have to like war and weapons to have enjoyed this. But you do have to have an interest in history.

15. Articles of Impeachment Against George W. Bush

On Sunday, May 7 at 3:30 am
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Articles of Impeachment Against George W. Bush
Michael Ratner, Bill Goodman, Maria Lahud, and Shayana Kadidal

Center for Constitutional Rights attorneys Michael Ratner, Bill Goodman, Maria Lahud, and Shayana Kadidal talk about their book, "Articles of Impeachments," at the Culture Project in New York City. The participants argue that President Bush should be impeached because he is abusing his power. They discuss the NSA domestic spying case, the administration's arguments supporting the invasion of Iraq, and the administration's use of indefinite detention and torture to support their case. The panel is moderated by Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman.

The Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) is a New York based legal organization founded in 1966. Lawyers from CCR represented Guantanamo Bay detainees in the Supreme Court case Rasul v. Bush. The case challenged the Bush administration's power to indefinitely detain foreign nationals in Guantanamo without trial and argued that detainees should be allowed to contest their imprisonment in U.S. courts. The Supreme Court ruled in CCR's favor. For more information on the book or the Center for Constitutional Rights, visit www.ccr-ny.org.

Donkey Cons: Sex, Crime and Corruption in the Democratic Party
Robert Stacy McCain

Author Robert Stacy McCain details what he describes as the criminal activities of what he considers to be today's most "famous and infamous liberals" in his new book he co-authored with Lynn Vincent, "Donkey Cons." Mr. McCain argues that the Democratic party is to blame for bribery, kickbacks, espionage, terrorism, and voter fraud in Congress. The author also claims that corrupt Democrats in Congress, measured by those who have been sanctioned for ethical reasons, outnumber corrupt Republicans by as much as three to one. The program was hosted by the Young America's Foundation.

Robert Stacy McCain is an assistant national editor for the Washington Times. He won the George Washington Medal from the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge for his series of columns on the National Standards for U.S. History.

Winning the Race: Beyond the Crisis in Black America
John McWhorter

In the sequal to 2000's "Losing the Race," author John McWhorter urges African Americans to acknowledge what he describes as the new racial realities of America. Mr. McWhorter addresses the issues of drug abuse, welfare reform and the exit of industiral jobs from inner cities as they relate to blacks, specifically young men. This event was hosted by the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, DC.

John McWhorter is the author of "Losing the Race: Self-Sabotage in Black America," "The Power of Babel: A Natural History of Language," "Authentically Black: Essays for the Black Silent Majority" and "Doing Our Own Thing: The Degradation of Language and Music and Why We Should, Like, Care." On Monday, May 8 at 3:00 am
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington's God: Religion, Liberty, and the Father of Our Country
Michael Novak and Jana Novak

Matthew Spalding and Daniel Dreisbach join Michael Novak and Jana Novak, co-authors of "Washington’s God" to discuss the religious life of George Washington. In their book, the Novaks say George Washington was a Christian, not a deist, as historians typically characterize him. The father/daughter team examines Washington’s religious pronouncements in an attempt to establish that George Washington did in fact worship the God of the Bible and did not embrace the idea of the absentee creator. Matthew Spalding, director of the Heritage Foundation and an expert on American political history and religious liberty joins the panel to offer his opinion, as does Daniel Dreisbach, who is a professor in the School of Public Affairs at American University. Includes Q&A.

Michael Novak is the George Frederick Jewett Chair in Religion, Philosophy and Public Policy at the American Enterprise Institute. He is a former U.S. ambassador and the author of "The Universal Hunger for Liberty" and "The Spirit of Democratic Capitalism." Jana Novak spent a decade working in politics for several national politicians, has worked for three magazines, and is the co-author of "Tell Me Why: A Father Answers His Daughter's Questions About God" with her father Michael Novak.

36. My hometown library... get this
Edited on Fri May-05-06 11:38 PM by Viva_La_Revolution
Heginbotham Library
Craftsman style bungalow. On the National Register of Historic Places

This Mansion (3000 sq. ft. By our standards, it was a mansion!) was built in 1917 by W.E. Heginbotham, where he lived for several years with his wife Mellisa, they had one son. He even had a tunnel dug between the house and the garage, so she wouldn't have to go out in the weather to go for a ride. Legend says there was a falling out between father and son, who moved away. When his wife died, he built on to the hospital, which was subsequently named the Mellisa Memorial hospital. When he died, his will stated that his estate was placed in trust for "the betterment and improvement for the people of Phillips County". That money built Holyoke and Haxtun swimming pools, financed the new HS Auditorium, financed the Holyoke Museam and basically kept this little cow town from declining like so many little farm towns have.

I love that Library. I've explored all the nooks and cranneys, and the amazing garden that has been kept up in their memory.

37. It's a beauty.
This is the Chicago Cultural Center now, but when it was a library, I used to take the Illinois Central from South Chicago to visit it. the room here is where they hold the Dame Myra Hess concerts, broadcast on WFMT, Chicago.

Lot's of great memories of performances and exhibits held there. They filmed part of The Untouchables throughout. (Nitti chase to the rooftop & I think part of it stood in as an opera house lobby. The room with the Tiffany ceiling was also a courtroom lobby.)

I'm a bit of a CIS geek myself, YMMV, but his accounts of the incredible penetrations he was able to achieve thanks to corporate apathy and heirarchical blindness, even at a company that designed nuclear plants... Wow.

That one's on my shopping list now.
