I have a IE question...techies help!!!!
Edited on Sat May-06-06 02:12 AM by pointblank
Sorry to ask this here, but I need help.

I am embarassed because I work in IT but, why is my Internet Explorer so slow?

Whenever I scroll in IE it is really slow, it lags whenever I scroll up and down...I even tried Mozilla and it is the same way.

anyone have any clue?

EDIT Thanks for everyone's answers but I just reloaded windows and there are no viruses/spyware. The ONLY thing that is slow is the web browsers...its weird...so basically I am on a new system....the only thing is the web browser is fucked up.

I am running a 1.8 ghz AMD Athelon processor, 1 ghz of memory 120 ghz of hard drive space and a 128 mb DDR3 Nvidia MSI NX 6600 GT video card.

1. not a techie here

but if more than one kind of browser shows the same behavior, it could be your machine or your connection.

Are you on a cable connection? If so, and one of your neighbors is doing some serious downloading/uploading, that could cause the slowdown. If it is lagging on the connection to the web, too, this could be it. If it is connecting fine, and just the scrolling is slow, it's probably something else.

Oh yeah, try cleaning out your cache, and if you have the software, check for spyware/adware.

2. Here are a few suggestions.
-How's your hard disk space? If it's nearly full, Windows may have to spend a lot of time shifting stuff around.
-When was the last time you defragged? If you have a lot of file fragments, that can slow your PC down
-Look at your RAM in the System control panel. Is it all there or has one of the banks disappeared? It may be faulty
-Have you emptied your IE history folder and cache (and the Firefox equivalents). The programs can get pretty bloated carrying all those old web pages around.
-Look at your active processes by hitting CTL+ALT+DEL and clicking the Processes tab. You might find that one of them is using a very high percentage of your CPU (98 or 99%). This might be a hung process that you need to kill. Often, Windows Explorer starts hogging space for no reason. If this is the case, restart the machine and it should return to normal.

Let me know how these work for you. If you don't notice an improvement, let me know and I'll think of something else.

7. No, don't kill system idle
Thats just the dumping process for all the free cpu capacity you have. If that's a high percentage then it means your processor isnt being overloaded, so the slowness problem is being caused by something else.

3. Lots of things could be wrong
Including memory, CPU, old/underpowered video card, etc.

Try the following:

On IE, from the Tools menu, select Options, then the Advanced tab. Look for something called "Use smooth scrolling" and uncheck it.

Also, you might consider making sure you have the latest patches, etc.

4. could be spyware
There are a multitude of anti-spyware programs out there to help you. I recommend you install more than one as each program detects different baddies. Examples are Hijackthis, Adaware and SpywareBlaster.

Also, you might want to install one of my favorite programs - Crap Cleaner. I've used other prgrams like this and I always got myself in a mess. However, Crap Cleaner does what it says, it removes crap.

5. Is it all websites?
I've seen more sites using, or should I say misusing, flash and other tech that move like you've described.

8. Two things to try
Edited on Sat May-06-06 02:48 AM by bananas
1) some video card drivers will cause this - go into Start > Control Panel > Display, on the Advanced tab there will be a slider for "Video Acceleration", slide it a notch to the left (less acceleration).
2) there might be a browser plug-in hogging the cpu, run taskmgr and see if the cpu load is high when running the browser. The easy way to run taskmgr is ctrl-alt-del. (on edit I see your post where you say Idle is at 95%, that indicates the cpu is not at high load, nothing is hogging the cpu).

10. Try running TCP Optimizer
http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php

They also have an analyzer on the left side. Gives you lots of info pre and post testing (mine's done). Easy interface, idiot proof.

TCP options string = 020405b40103030301010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

Default TCP Receive Window (RWIN) = 513920
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 3 bits (scale factor of 6)
Unscaled TCP Receive Window = 64240

RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other RWIN values that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8) <-- current value
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):

Your TCP Window limits you to: 20556.8 kbps (2569.6 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your TCP Window limits you to: 8222.72 kbps (1027.84 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 56 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000 (0)

11. hi from your post
it looks like you recently re-installed. I have the same video card and i have the same problem on first rebuild. I dont know if you are using the Nvidia drivers or not. This is what fixes mine. Use the latest Nvidia drives not the MS packaged ones.

Hope this helps.

12. Get CCleaner. It's free.
Clean both your HDD of crap files and your registry of "slack" entries(Useless dead ends). Get KMCS Deluxe System Suite. Use the registry compression program in it to compress your registry. Get Perfect Disk 7.0, the absolutely best disk defrag on the market, bar none. Use it to defrag with the "Smart Placement" option and also defrag your system files at bootup(Set it by right clicking on the drive letter in the list and selection properties.

Also, you can squeexe more speed out of your system, easily, with Tweak Now Powerpack 2006. It's inexpensive and easily speeds up your machine and your connection, and is safe. You cannot set anything in their that will nuke your machine.

The way I do this sort of stuff is quite similar but a lot more complicated. This is easiest and will work well.

13. Is it every page or just some pages?
One thing I've noticed that will make browsers lag, regardless of system specs, is when a page is filled with images tagged to be shrunk by the browser. If you hit a page with say, a series of 200x100 images, but the images are actually 800x400, scrolling will be stuttery as the browser tries to resize them. If the hangups happen just when images scroll onto the screen, it's a pretty good indication that's what's happening.
