Response to Mrs Alito: Call your Senators!
Please let them know that Mrs. Alito should be put out of her misery. She obviously needs her husband's attention and will not do well married to a Supreme Court Justice.

Be humane. Be brief. Please ask that the Alitos be relieved of this civic burden.

I called Feinstein and Boxer.

Who else?

But let's err on the side of compassion... it would be cruel to put her through a life of agony... there's no argument there when the fundies tell ya not to be mean to her or to loosen your tinfoil hat when you suggest it was all Hollywood tears.

If it was legit she would have hightailed it out of the room to protect hubby before she preformed that bad display--her tears were of false joy because goony Lindsay was praising her hubby.

This was the cheapest stunt going IMO

36. I happen to agree with Cooley Hurd, and I'm female, though you have no way
of knowing whether he/she is male or female. I had always assumed the latter.

But her/his point is well taken. If this woman has emotional problems, then she is ill suited to public life. I'm female and I'd be damned if I'd cry in public, let alone on national television. Her husband is up for a very important job and he is going to be judged on every factor imaginable. Ed Muskie was denied the nomination because he cried, for all the world to see. Mrs. Alito had better get her act together or she'll be responsible for jeopardizing her husband's chances. He was the one on the hot seat and he managed to keep it together. If she can't, then she had better remain off camera. Enough said.;(

40. I'd suggest that you not do it on national television.
Perhaps "emotional problems" is too strong a term, but it sure connotes a lack of self-control. I don't blame the woman, just as sfxpat2000 doesn't, but agree that her emotionality makes her ill suited for public life. The country judged Ed Muskie and they certainly will judge her, to the detriment of her unemotional husband.

71. Hey, Beth, you must know that I was being sarcastic. Yikes!
Maybe I didn't phrase my post just right, but you have to know that I'm coming from the same place that you are. I posted numerous times on that thread, and I compared Mrs. Scalito's dress, today, with Carol Burnett's "curtains in the window" sketch.

As for Mrs. Scalito's outburst, I missed it, since I was already on the road when it happened, but I heard about it, in detail, from friends who did see it, and on DU. And I'm sure that I can catch it on news clips. I totally agree with you that this woman is ill suited for public life and should be returned to the private life that she wants and needs.;(

And as for this thread, I entirely agree with you. I've sure posted, as such. And I'll call or e-mail my senators, but I already know that they're going to vote against him, as they did against Roberts. I have Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer. I have heard Schumer speechifying against him, and I know how vehemently Hillary was opposed to Roberts, so I'm sure that she must be even more opposed to Alito. We are okay in California and NY. It's the other states that we have to work on. *sigh*:-(

79. I'm sorry! It's not your pain that I meant to mention, but Mrs. Scalito's!
Her choice of dress was severely criticized on DU, and that was long before her crying jag, which I, unfortunately, missed. But I have little sympathy for either, though I usually sympathize with everybody. I just figure that she's made her bed... and let the chips fall where they may. I just hope that she's spared the additional trauma of being in the spotlight, after this hearing is over, and is able to return to her private life, where she can cry, if ever she wants to, without the glare of cameras.;(

Scalito has been working his skinny @ss off to suck up to his corporate bosses since he graduated Princeton.

I posted, on another thread, that he has the advantage of being polite, unlike the smirking John Roberts. But I've read up on his views, anti-choice, supports executive power, pro machine guns, anti one-person-one-vote, against separation of church and state, should I go on?! Not someone I want making decisions for me, for the rest of his life! I promise to call both Hillary and Schumer, but I already know where they stand. The best I can do, for you and for us, is to kick this thread. You have made your point and I entirely support it. And the fact that you did it with humor should be a plus for all on DU! Thanks!!!:D

Exactly. I don't think she's "emotionally unstable"; crying does not indicate emotional instability, but when an adult does it in public, s/he's probably just trying to attract attention. If she was so disturbed that she needed to cry, she should have gone to the bathroom and cried there.

I think that this kind of manipulative behavior hurts women everywhere.

I'm sure he'd go into deep thought over my suggestions!

78. Oh, crap, my friend! I feel your pain. :-(
We, in NY, are often frustrated and perplexed at some of our Democratic senators positions on certain issues, but we have nothing on you! I suppose that it wouldn't hurt to e-mail your senators, but I do agree, from what I've seen and read, that Sen. Coburn has a very closed mind. That's what I meant when I replied to sfxpat2000 that we are okay in California and NY, but we have to worry about the states in between. Just do what you can, and I totally sympathize with you, since my rep in Congress is Bush* lite. He's progressive on the environment and animal protection legislation, and sponsors these bills, but was part of the Bush* group that went to Florida in 2000 and supports Homeland Security, is even on the committee. *sigh* But I still e-mail him. Sometimes we agree and sometimes we don't, but I have never let up on him, unlike the rest of his grateful constituents here in upstate NY Freeper country. I imagine that he's tired of hearing from me, but I'm his constituent, so I have the right to tell him what I think. And so do you. But I'm sorry, nonetheless.:-(

That's all I know.

Call your Senators! Don't let the Thug's use her tears against us.

If they can't handle this process, they can't handle the bench.

" Interesting, executive privelege motions, again"

"there weren't any of those mean, spiteful, *sniff* oh just *sobbing* awful people like at that one hearing were there? When I think of them, I just eeeeeeeerrrrrrrr, *sniff*"

" no dear, why dont you hand me the knife, I'll cut the bread so you don't hurt yourself again. Did you remember to take those pills the Doctor recommended. We do need our beauty rest now, don't we?"

had to go through so much.

I skipped out to a friend's to check out PBS' coverage, OMFG. Haven't watched them in years. Are they rightwing shills now or what?

Anyhoo, saw Lindsay crying those fake tears men cry after they just beat the shit out of their wives, except he was buttering up Alito with his "you poor, poor victim, you" schtick.

91. As a female and a crier
... I don't see why this has been made into such a big deal. I cry when I'm happy, when I'm sad, when I'm frustrated. I cried over a cat food commercial once. As a friend of mine says "You're just a crier, that's just how it is."

Yes, I have cried in public and I don't consider myself "emotionally unstable" but it's really not a big deal to me when I burst into tears either. I certainly wouldn't expect it to be the lead story on CNN.

92. Crying and hurrying from the Senate hearing room? Why?
Because her husband's past was being discussed? Did she NOT know about her husband's past? What BS!

No one has said it better than TahitiNut, IMO:

"Yet these are the people who don't think it's 'torture' unless permanent
... organ damage results - or death. Kabuki. Staged. Rehearsed. Deliberate. Bullshit melodrama."

Ms. Alito's crocodile tears were for manipulation purposes ONLY.

Why is this being "made into such a big deal"? Because the rethugs are trying to manufacture public support for this fascist liar.
They are trying to get us to disregard his outrageously dangerous rulings and mind-set.

... Whether or not you personally are a "crier" is quite irrelevant. We aren't talking emotion here.
