New Jersey Scraps New Slogan After Finding It Used Elsewhere (DOH!)
New Jersey Scraps New Slogan After Finding It Used Elsewhere

POSTED: 10:54 pm EDT May 6, 2006

TRENTON, N.J. -- New Jersey: We're Not So Good With Slogans.

The state has jettisoned "Come See For Yourself," its second attempt at a tagline in less than a year. It was the product of a statewide contest set up by then-acting Gov. Richard J. Codey last fall, after he rejected a consultant's offering: "We'll Win You Over."

State tourism officials said legal issues led them to scrap the latest slogan, explaining that West Virginia and other states previously used "Come See For Yourself."

"We are proceeding without the slogan. We will revisit the next steps at the end of the year," Karen Wolfe, a spokeswoman for the state Commerce, Economic Growth and Tourism Commission, told The Press of Atlantic City for Saturday editions.

Codey, now state Senate president, dismissed "We'll Win You Over" because he said it reminded him too much of when he was single and asked girls out on a date.

"Come See For Yourself" was the top choice among more than 11,000 telephone and online votes cast by residents for five finalist entries in the contest. Codey unveiled the slogan with great fanfare in January, saying the Garden State's catch phrase "should hint at our true beauty."

1. "home of the sopranos"? "where springsteen was 'born to run' from"?
how about "new jersey: all turns from right lane"?

"new jersey: free to enter, pay to leave"?

2. With all of the NJ jokes that come around on this topic...
I still say we ought to use the standard NJ good morning greeting:

"New Jersey: Go F*** Yourself". ;-)

7. How about a slight modification to a line from that song
New Jersey: Baby, this place rips the bones from your back.

Comedian Robert Wuhl had a bit about a governor or someone from New Jersey wanting to make Born to Run the state's anthem, and he went through the song piece by piece pointing out that ripping bones from one's back wouldn't look good on a flag, suicide is not normally found in anthems, etc.

19. that's funny
I hadn't heard about that. Guess that's what one might call "concrete and vivid" language, LOL.

How about: Property Taxes Higher than Most Peoples' Salaries!

Actually, I like the place or I wouldn't have lived here 25+ years.

Did you know a NJ town was voted the number one best place to live in America for 2005? Here's the link:

6. lol- everything I hear about Jersey is bad. "Come see for yourself" is
hardly encouraging.

No offense to any New Jersey natives on the boards- I'm sure it's a lovely place.

9. Many parts of it are lovely, indeed.
The NJ Turnpike corridor gets a bad rap and along much of its northern length, it pretty well deserves it. Get west of the Turnpike, or south of Exit 8, and the picture changes remarkably. The Jersey Shore is famous, but as I'm not a beach person, and grew up in The Bronx, I can't speak to its attractions. I'll leave that to someone who's grown up in the state to champion.

Even those like me who grew up in NYC run down New Jersey (or as we call it disparagingly, "Jersey"). Move here, though, and it can be an eye-opener. I've lived in Northwestern New Jersey for fifteen years and I'm still discovering the state.

Keep listening, you'll hear the good stuff. :)

13. Exactlyh right! I moved to a small town 35 miles west of the
George Washington Bridge, precisely because it had that New England feel to it. :)

8. Um, Duh! Is it possible other states used it because it worked?
Is it possible that NJ residents voted for it because they'd seen or heard it before and it smacked of familiarity?

Why did it have to be original? What are these "legal issues"? Can states Trademark phrases in the English language now?

Would anyone have noticed or cared that other states used it if NJ hadn't scrapped it and made the rejection a minor news story? Would some other state's tourism board have sued ours?

I don't get it.
