The Colbert Effect - Wow!!
MadCasey has an amazing diary at Dkos showing how Colbert is not only blasting around our neck of the online world...he's now blasting thru non-politcal sites like MySpace. Also, clip downloads and searches about him are actually picking up steam!!

see: UPDATED: The Colbert Effect: Beyond fun & Games
http://dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/5/7/142842/1393

Madcasey grabs from another diary (hat tip: NYCO) here:

If you do a search on "Colbert" on Technorati, you'll notice that most of the people now talking about Colbert are users of services like Myspace and Livejournal -- teenagers, housewives, and people who don't visit places like Daily Kos on a regular basis. The fact that his speech has penetrated into the nonpolitical blogosphere is pretty significant.

Even more, on thankyoustephencolbert.org they are up to over 51,000 messages and a lot of these people are now relating how they have communicated the story of Colbert's routine to people who don't use the Internet.

The weird thing, which we have already noted here by criticizing the MSM's ignoring of the Colbert incident, is that for the people in power (and their sycophants, the Right), this was pretty much a non-event. Nothing worth their attention, much less anger. But on the other side, "our" side, the depth of feeling is huge. This is the exact equivalent of what happens when the Right sends out a dog whistle to the Christian conservatives. The Left doesn't hear it. (And truly, I don't even think some of "our" people in the blogosphere are hearing the dog whistle of the Colbert incident.)

Regarding the Colbert speech being a dog whistle, I think something that is lurking underneath the surface is just what this particular dog whistle says to people on a certain level... the whole aspect of "access" to the powerful, the sheer physicality of Colbert's confrontation - in that he was actually in the room with all these people, 10 feet away from the Dear Leader, etc.

(emphasis MadCasey's)

The diary goes on to cite yesterday's Yahoo Buzz index: searches for Colbert were up 5,625% and still picking up speed. Not only that - searches for Helen Thomas and Valerie Plame have also leapt in # of searches this week.

with a remarkably powerful speech, complete with minimum wage and homelessness statistics for NY and PA in the presence of the PA governor. I'm willing to bet that he got "Colbert-ed up!"

to get Colbert's speech, over 1700 people were seeding it. A hot video/audio usually has 20 seeders. So this is huge.

6. It appears that Colbert is accomplishing...
What Bob Dylan and rockers did in the 60s, and what MAD Magazine did in the 50s, that is, bringing political awareness to youth in a format that connects to them. It takes a special touch to put youngsters on a critical path to social events. He done good.

:sarcasm:

Remember that initial AP story? ONE line toward the end about Colbert's appearance.

Absofuckinglutely amazing.

The internet population is showing clearly that they were failed by the "mainstream" corporate media in this case, actually proving all of Colbert's points about the press. There is NO QUESTION about that; they can deny it all they want.

9. I showed it in my university classes
I came up with ways to fit it into the curriculum. For example, in classes where we studied nonverbal communication, I had them watch the audience shots for the gestures, facial expresssions, etc. First we watched with the sound off. Then I asked them to interpret it. Then we watched with the sound on.

Nyco is absolutely on the money about one thing:

...the whole aspect of "access" to the powerful, the sheer physicality of Colbert's confrontation - in that he was actually in the room with all these people, 10 feet away from the Dear Leader, etc.

That's what was doing it for the younger crowd. They absolutely were enthralled at what he did, practically right in bush's face.

21. My wife teaches at a Cathoilic High School.
She's one of the lone liberals there. The student population comes from a fairly wealthy background and the majority of parents are very big Repugs. She said the kids are going crazy over Cobert's video. She never discusses her politics with her class as a matter of principle but the kids are bringing it up to each other. It was even mentioned in a Channel One video. Cobert has started a revolution and the youth get his humor. Maybe some of us middle aged liberals are still young at heart because I personally laughed until I cried during his bit. Maybe the reason some of the conservatives and talking heads don't find it funny is that their hearts have aged. IMHO, that is the biggest difference between a conservative and a liberal.

25. yeah, I like it too
especially:

<snip>

Knowing their days are numbered, those who run the White House made an effort to present Bush as a harmless and friendly idiot last weekend, when he did a clumsy "comedy" routine with a Bush impersonator from the Jay Leno show.

But those few minutes of moronic self-congratulatory slapstick between the Washington media and those in power were quickly forgotten when comic Stephen Colbert attacked Bush as a criminal failure during a 20-minute routine that left the gathered press absolutely dumbfounded.

It only got worse on Monday, when millions and millions of Americans watched the entire savage operation on their computers. The last thing the scandal-ridden White House needed was having half the country laugh at Bush's impotent rage as a television personality tore him to shreds for the disastrous war in Iraq, the 9/11 attacks, the Katrina outrage, Cheney's drunken shotgun antics, the awful sex-torture ordered by the sick administration, $3.50-per-gallon gasoline and the constant trampling of America's constitution.

<snip>

copyright issues. Last time I checked, CSPAN still had it up on c-span.org and was also selling DVDs of the whole program (not just Colbert's speech).

on edit: I just checked c-span.org again. Not only is the whole show still there, they now have a separate link just to get to Colbert's speech. Guess what's listed first on their list o' things to download? :rofl:
