Dear Republicans,
The Earth is immortal. Even with all of our arcane knowledge and all our destructible might, we could not destroy the planet we call Earth. We could, if we had a mind to do so, simultaneously detonate every nuclear bomb on the planet and even still, the Earth would remain. If we were to do that, however, what would happen is that every living thing on the planet would die and the Earth would likely become barren for billions and billions of years. But eventually, life too would find its way back from the primordial ooze from whence we came. The planet would clean itself up and some frozen protein, untouched for millennia would eventually mutate into a cell and that cell would eventually mutate into trees and birds and every manner of life we understand today. This is the nature of our world; it is immortal.

Because the earth is immortal, my concerns over global warming, nuclear weapons, unrestrained population expansion, perpetual war, famine, genocide, corruption, pollution, water control, and a veritable host of other planetary, continental, country, state and local problems are purely of a selfish and self-perpetuating nature. I, like you, have been placed on this planet, given a random selection of operating manuals and then cast out into an inclusive ocean of ignorant and ingenious souls. So now, here we are, both of us forced into relationship by our presence in time and both relying on history, tradition, instinct, and conscience to maintain an equitable balance between the things I need to survive and flourish and the things you need to survive and flourish. This is the predicament of man; and it too is immortal.

These words aptly describe the nature of our relationship and provide the basis for our “Contract with America”. A government exists to serve the greater good for all the people and should represent all of the people. I am saddened to say that I do not feel that this Government has that aim in mind. The focus of our Government does not appear to guarantee individual liberty but instead seeks uniformity through intimidation, secrecy and fear. It seeks to benefit solely those who share the same ideology and lifestyle. Yet the protection and liberty afforded to the citizens of this country are granted through the right of birth or the gift of lawful immigration. When a group of people decide to manipulate this arrangement through intimidation, they are clawing at the very fabric of our Contract.


Every man's nature is a sufficient advertisement to him of the character of his fellows. My right and my wrong, is their right and their wrong. Whilst I do what is fit for me, and abstain from what is unfit, my neighbor and I shall often agree in our means, and work together for a time to one end. But whenever I find my dominion over myself not sufficient for me, and undertake the direction of him also, I overstep the truth, and come into false relations to him. I may have so much more skill or strength than he, that he cannot express adequately his sense of wrong, but it is a lie, and hurts like a lie both him and me. Love and nature cannot maintain the assumption: it must be executed by a practical lie, namely, by force.

So I am reaching out to you today to beg you to reflect on your support for the wrongs being done in our name. Though you see me as just a Liberal Democrat, you must understand that I too am an American, just like you. This is not your country, it’s our country and you are helping to perpetuate this “practical lie”. You are manipulating the love of our Constitution and Country to serve your own interests at the expense of millions and millions of people who can’t seem to find the strength to express their “sense of wrong”. However, you must now realize the people who are running this country have reached a level of corruption that is an abomination on the History of our Country. Something has to be done to put an end to this madness or they’re going to bring us all down with them.

So, all I’m asking you to do is this; stop for a moment and think about the possibility that you may be wrong. Just pause for a moment and think about the possibility that wishing for the death of a stranger, may be wrong. Try to imagine that hating someone you don’t know, may be wrong. Try to imagine that allowing people to suffer without health care may be wrong. We are here to ensure access to Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness for every American; just for a moment, look around at the faces around you. Do people look happy? Do they look free? Do they even look alive? There is something fundamentally wrong with your views if you think that our government currently has any interest in helping everyone seek these ends. We have been divided as a nation into sects of Democrats and Republicans, Liberals and Conservatives. Can’t we pause for a moment and look at the other side of the coin?

Global warming is real. The deficit is real. The corruption is real. The hypocrisy of these leaders of Faith is real. By what right do they pollute our water, run up our debt, steal, cheat, and lie, manipulate and divide us? George said that Jesus picked him to be President and attack Iraq. Is it now by divine inspiration that a President decides to attack another nation? Do you honestly believe that? If you do, then simply ask him. Ask Jesus if he sent George to decide to attack Iraq. Did Jesus want to spoil our good name by leading us into a lie? Ask him, get down on your knees and bow before our Lord Jesus, the Prince of Peace and ask him if this is what he wants his children to do to one another. You know how to pray so do it. Even if you don’t believe in Jesus, kneel down and ask God or ask your conscience. Ask whatever higher power you believe in, should we be killing any more Iraqi’s now that we know there were No WMD in Iraq? Should we be denying children access to health care, a quality education, to a future that’s better than the one we had? Should we be abandoning our Faith for the Creed of your Party?

You’re going to have to wake up to the reality of what you’re supporting. You’re going to have to stop reveling in the degradation of other humans. Right now, “your” party is in control of our Government and “your” party is out of control. We will not allow our country to fall at the hands of conmen and thieves. You have the illusion that you are in control but there is a reckoning coming, I can assure you of that. Soon, you’re going to have to choose sides. Are you a Republican or an American? Are you a Conservative or an American? The choice is yours but may very well brand you as a traitor to liberty.

We refuse to see our children enslaved to debtor Nations. We refuse to enter into wars with countries that pose no military threat to ours. We refuse to support the deaths of innocents with our silence. We refuse. We refuse. We refuse. The Rule of Law will apply to all or to none. If you wish to cast it aside then continue to support criminals and that law that you believe protects you from us will disappear. Our government exists to help us all get along, not divide and conquer us. If war is all you can understand then you will get war. You’ll grow it in our own country or import it from overseas but any fool can find a fight. We can’t beat the world (hell, we can’t even beat Iraq), will you fight to the death to continue to allow criminals to rule this country? This Nation must be a nation of laws that ensures the Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness for all it’s people or why bother? Just declare a King or a Dictator and have done with the whole thing. I for one am sick of it and pray that for a moment, you really and truly think about what you are supporting.

8. Great article, Mike. However, I do quibble a bit with your supposition
about what will happen to the Earth itself. Our planet is NOT believed to be immortal, unless you subscribe to a molecular disbursement theory -- and, of course, then there's the argument about what will ultimately happen to the galaxy and the universe!

Here's what scientists might say to an inquiring student:

Q: I've heard that in the future, the Sun will turn into a red giant and swallow the first three planets (Earth being one of them). I know this will happen in about 5 or 6 billion years but is there any chance of life on earth moving to another location? What do you suppose will happen?

A: If humans are still around then, I think it would be completely reasonable to think that they could move to a different location. Some of the outer moons of Jupiter and Saturn would be a lot warmer then. They might even have liquid oceans at that point. My guess is that Earthlings will have figured out faster forms of travel by then so they could go to a completely different solar system...knowing how much has been accomplished in just the past 100 years on Earth, things beyond our imagination will be done in 5 billion years!
