More on Socialism
An archived discussion occured on the definition of socialism and I wanted to add some reading material to it:

http://www.nepalnews.com/archive/2006/others/guestcolumn/may/guest_columns_may06_04.php

"Fareed Zakaria (editor of Newsweek International) cautions that we are witnessing a disturbing phenomenon of so-called democratically elected regimes, even those that have been re-elected or re-affirmed through referendum, especially in the Third World countries from Peru to Philippines. He calls this phenomenon the “rise of illiberal democracies,” states that hold free elections but ignore constitutional limits on their power, deprive their citizens of basic rights, and do not honor the rule of the law."

"Bolivian President Evo Morales’ takeover of his nation’s natural gas fields is the latest attempt to raise the political Frankenstein of socialism, but the result will be just as disastrous as the original, fictional experiment."

Here in America Bush and Cheney allowed Big Business to take all the natural gas they could off of anyone's property they wanted to. In effect stealing billions of dollars of natural resources from us and selling them to the highest bidder.

1. I'd call this a red herring.
Neoliberalism drove Latin America to the edge of bankruptacy as the Chicago economist led by Milton Friedman ruled Latin America. Not Communist, just following their own course. Even right wing governments in Europe don't mess with many Socialist programs like established health care reforms. And the odd fact, compared to the US private health care system, it is significantly cheaper.

2. Neo-liberal is such a classic propaganda term.
Neither new, nor liberal.

Generally having neo or new in a phrase is a good sign there is nothing new about it.

5. agreed
It's really more of a cover up.. It is really a corporate expansionist program. Putting on the word liberal confuses those who think it might have something progressive about it. just false marketing to cover up a neo-fascist agenda. Fascist being defined as state support for state defined essential industries.
In the Third Reich sense, favoring defense industries. Now any industry that controls the state through it's system of legal bribery.

3. "takeover" of his nation’s (own) resources...
Imagine that, to "take over" what was yours to begin with...

If that's illiberal, then "liberal" means to take over what was not yours to begin with - which is basically what the wealthy nations have been doing ever since the colonial age.

4. "So called democratically elected regimes?"
What country does that fit, I wonder?
