Poll question: What's next for Katherine Harris after she loses the FL Senate race ?
Congresswoman Katherine Harris is trailing badly in her challenge to Senator Bill Nelson.

Her campaign staff has resigned en masse and GOP players are publicly calling for her to quit the race.

Her campaign is derided in the press as a trainwreck.

What do you think the future holds for Ms. Harris?

3. Y'know, she could do several options at once
For instance, Bush makes her an ambassador to some pro-US dictatorship where political dissidents are shot, and she writes a tell-all book about how she fucked over America by killing the recounts and purging minority voters from the rolls.

9. Hey Bluebear -- do you have any update for us on Katherine Harris?
Every time I get a new account, her campaign is in worse shape than it was the last time.

Jan Schneider evidently thinks Porter Goss is going to run for the nomination to take on Nelson -- but with all the whispers about the cigars and poker games and prostitutes, I just don't see that happening.

Do you know what's going on down there in that race? It's getting REAL interesting.

11. Nothing more than you know....
The latest incarnation of Katherine the Pious was, to me, nauseating and revealing. The last adjective that came to mind when thinking about her bouncing her new purchases on FOX news was "holy"....I don't know if she is truly a Christian reconstructionist or just a desparate opportunist, but at least some in Florida buy her "Christian" act:

Prayer posted on the internets:

Our Heavenly Father,

The enemy seeks to destroy a responsible woman who is being persecuted for telling the truth and standing for what is right. Father, we pray that You would silence the enemy and let their venom be spewed on each other, rather than the innocent. Let their continued plotting, scheming, and slandering result in the desire of the entire country, including the media, to expell them. Father, they persist in calling good, evil; and evil, good. For their purposes are served only through evil.

Father we pray for strength and courage for this woman. Let her make no decisions that are not by Your hand. Let her be strong in You, Lord and in the power of Your might. Give her wisdom beyond all understanding—the wisdom that can only come from You. Hide her under the shadow of Your wings until these calamities pass. Bless her and reward her for her faithfulness. In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Yep. :) Some background for those that don't know:
<snip
Katherine Harris, Florida's Secretary of State back in 2001, was quite enchanted with a miracle product named, “Celestial Drops” – which name should have been enough of a warning in itself. Ms. Harris, rightly concerned about the fact that citrus canker was blighting the Florida crop, considered this “alternative” treatment, which was supposed to work by principles of “improved fractal design,” “infinite levels of order,” and “high energy and low entropy.” Not at all slowed by the fact that she had no notion of what those terms meant, and without first calling in scientific advisors, Secretary Harris ordered a formal study in which researchers worked with a rabbi and a cardiologist – obviously the appropriate experts for such an investigation – to test the drops. That official study determined that the product tested was simply water that had been blessed according to the principles of Kabbalist mysticism, "changing its molecular structure and imbuing it with supernatural healing powers." Right!

Then the Celestial Drops notion was scientifically tested. As a result, Wayne Dixon, the head of Florida's Bureau of Entomology, Nematology, and Plant Pathology, reported that the

…product is a hoax and not based on any credible known science…. I wish to maintain our standing in the scientific community and not allow the developers of Celestial Drops to use our hard-earned credibility to promote their product.

We’ve learned that Ms. Katherine Harris has moved up to greater heights of power; she is now a member of the U.S. House of Representatives….

in line for Bense.

And unfortunately, Bense would be a far sturdier opponent than Harris against Nelson.

While Bill Nelson is no fire-belching progressive, he is far preferable to any Republican in that seat, and I hope he holds on.

Nelson does have the advantage of having started his plans and fundraising early, and Bense wold have to play a little catch-up.

Could be an interesting week down in the Sunshine State.

34. I don't think that can be ruled out. She has been under a lot of
pressure lately, some of it of her own making, and she may be vulnerable.

Her life would be easier if she told the truth about the 2000 election in her state. But I have a notion it would mean she'd spend prison time, so she's where she is instead.

Very good point, I think. A political confession would give her legal difficulties but it might relieve her of the burdens she's carrying. Maybe the human being she was a long time ago could still be salvaged from the wreckage.

46. That's a key point, too. Dubya himself is written up all the time as
"loyal," as someone who values "loyalty" above all else.

But of course when it was clear that Harriet Miers would not be confirmed, she "voluntarily" stepped aside. No up-and-down vote for Harriet!

Richard Clarke had served long and well for years in security but Rice didn't like his truthtelling and toughness, so out he goes. Bush would had to have signed onto that.

And here's poor ol' Katherine Harris, and it's just as you said it is: she hands them the presidency and then they abandon her. Granted, she's a horrifying excuse for a public servant, but where is the honor among thieves?

Loyalty is under serious strain with this administration.

55. Definitely agree that loyalty is one of the subengines driving this thing.
The Bush crowd is not known for its altruism in the first place.

I imagine Katherine Harris thought she had a free ride in the inner circle forever, and you're right -- evidently she's found out that's just not the case.

The GOP power players need to be careful. If they promote Bense, but Harris beats him in the primary, their chances of carrying other statewide races in November go way down.

57. Loyalty only goes so far, OC
About the Clarke firing; Bush may not have "signed off" in any traditional "due diligence" sense. Rice could have said; "I'm firing Clarke" and Bush just gave it the "OK". Clarke was a holdover and given Bush's style on (/sarcasm on)"management style" (/sarcasm off) just allowed Connie to run her own show.

But I'm willing to bet that now that they know what a pain in the ass Clarke has been for them, they wish they'd kept him on and thereby co-opted him.

For Bush, loyalty is covering one's ass...his. If you take one for the Gripper (Bush) then YOU are showing loyalty. But now, at this point in his Admin, loyalty for Bush has become something that he must dole out to his subordinates in order to cover up his misdeeds.

Harris's Senate run (and more directly, her House election) was something that they wanted, not just because of another rubber stamp vote, but to keep her happy and silent. Unfortunately her own actions have become an embarrassment to them.

Bush has been in power for 5 plus years now. Harris was the first of many for which spoils were needed to command loyal silence. There are a lot of little (and not so little) "Harrises" out there. Maybe too many for an increasingly smaller number of plumes to offer? (The "bigger" foxes got all the good ones first. Just look at where Wolfie ended up!)

Will she write a tell-all book? I hope so, but time will tell.

As for the vote...........I went with other: I hope she becomes an object lesion (ala Boss Tweed, the Chicago Daley Voting Machine, and other notorious political crooks) for Am History students and concerned citizens from now and until forever.

69. I'm right with you there on Richard Clarke. I like him, so it still
rankles that he was treated so dismissively. Also agree with your scenario with Rice and Bush regarding Clarke. It's got a very convincing ring of autheticity to it.

Bush is definitely a cover-my-own-butt president. He's an ant in a wilderness -- just completely lost. Harris has become a problem and they can't manipulate her very well because she's still a live wire, still knows how it went down that November evening in 2000, still could make it hot for them.

With every new insight to this administration and its extended flunkies, I like the GOP less, and I didn't like them at all to begin with.

43. I have a feeling she senses this is a possibility if her actual role ever
was revealed about the 2000 election in Florida.

The GOP wants her to drop out of the Senate race because they fear she will drag other statewide races and local GOP candidates down. A legitimate concern. Nelson is going to destroy Harris and her loss will likely sink a couple House seats.

But they can't pressure her too hard because she knows where several of the bodies are buried.

So it's a tense little dance down there right now. Very interesting to watch.

Harris.

She's a sitting Congresswoman in a fairly Republican district.

It's hard to say what motivates people. And I don't have a lot of good guesses about Katherine Harris. My main exposure to her was just on television during the days and weeks after the 2000 election.

Well, let's get a big bag of popcorn and see what happens.

51. Hi, Freddie Stubbs. Thanks for that link. The HERALD is usually
right on top of things, too.

The Rethugs are sweating a Bill Nelson-led Democratic sweep, as the article indicates. If Harris is the nominee, it may suppress the GOP turnout, and so Charlie Crist would lose to (Davis?) for the gubernatorial race.

Which would be GREAT.

It will also be kind of fun to watch if Bense jumps in and Harris whups him. That would be devastating for the Republicans.

And that would be GREAT, too.

Between the inch-thick make-up and fake knockers she's going to make tons of money licensing protective gear for the armed services.

75. Really enjoyed your "losers, I mean winners, I mean supporters..."
there, gasperc. Really excellent.

Is the Florida primary in September? There may be time for Bense or another Republican to jump in and challenge her.

Not sure what's going on down there at this point.

77. Now that would be something. I wonder if Barbara Walters would go
for it. Isn't she the producer or host or something?

Anyway, I could actually see Katherine Harris doing it. And I think she might be pretty good. Just what that panel needs, too -- an aristocratic fundamentalist Christian.

74. A warm welcome to DU, ChrisdemW. Thanks for throwing in for this
thread.

I think your prediction will come to pass: if Harris wins the GOP nomination for this Senate race, I believe Nelson is going to crush her like a potato chip.

'Hope to see you around on these boards. Welcome.

It seems to attract a lurid crowd from time to time, frequently after hours.

80. I don't have any trouble picturing her in a luxury sedan, no matter
what. She seems attuned to expensive stuff, that's for sure.

I wonder if she really does want to run for Senate or if she's waiting for the national GOP to sweeten the pot before she leaves. I think she may be holding out for a swank ambassador's post somewhere.

83. On a cleaning theme, I thought she might be a good stand-in for that
woman who advertises Swifter (sp?) mops.

Or whatever they are.

Katherine Harris bears a resemblance to that woman.

I think she'd be forecful enough of a presence to sell the things, too.
