If your livelihood depends on tourists,
such as, you own/work at a restaurant/motel, etc. in an area that is heavily dependent on tourism, are you seeing a decrease in the number of customers you usually have at this time of year?

1. Maybe not, in some areas
One thing my family used to do when we wanted to save money but still have vacation is take a vacation to a place close to home, to someplace nearby and touristy that we otherwise wouldn't go to...

2. Not Yet
I own an inn in Vermont and it's too soon to tell for this summer, as the season hasn't yet kicked off. I was worried about this last summer, though, when gas prices also skyrocketed (I assume that's what you're getting at) and we had a decent, but not spectacular summer. My impression is that we lost about 5% of our business to high fuel costs.

8. Yes, I was referring to high gas prices causing people to change
their vacation plans.

13. Hello and welcome KingM34
And good luck to you and your business venture. New Orleans businesses are fretting now that Jazz Fest is over and the tourist season dies a slow death throughout the summer til Labor Day in the Big Easy.

4. Tourists still as plentiful as ever where I am - lots of wealthy with $$
They have lots of bucks and don't worry about the cost of fuel. They have money from their tax cuts, are buying new, bigger boats and new bigger trucks to pull them.

The people around here who actually produce food for America's tables are having trouble though. And it is costing more to get that food to market too.

But the wealthy are having a ball. Buying up ranch property and pretending they are pioneers. Working to convince us there is a tax on death that has to be repealed. Spending fortunes on horses and horse trailers. Buying up very expensive rifles and spending outrageous sums to hire caterers for hunting trips.

Now, folks near national park campgrounds might be noticing a real drop in tourism.

15. It's his real base
There is an effort to going on to get real people off the land around here and make big game preserves.

Some idiots even suggested this as a good place to put African lions and elephants. Eastern Montana... African lions and elephants? Either global is a LOT further along than anyone admits of some people have their heads up their tushies.

9. Well, if we legalized personal possession of drugs
we'd at least have a better time waiting out the season to see if it was gonna be any good.

12. The season is just starting
Edited on Mon May-08-06 06:58 PM by DearAbby
The season is just starting, Season usually starts in full around the end of May and runs to the end of Semptember.

Hope that these fine people don't suffer because of the fuel prices. It hurts a lot of people...while the fat CEOs sit counting their ill gained profits.

14. Nope... actually a very good season, particularly Euro's
One of the odd byproducts of a weak US dollar is an influx of foreign tourists.

16. not sure yet
our county (in Cal.) is dependent on tourism and agriculture... won't know until late May, since the rainy season just stopped...the trick will be to count the folks in the RVs and with trailers... if they don't show then gas prices really are biting into people's budget...

17. What about making it impossible to get a visa
because you know, the 911 terrorist were foreigners?

has that cut into any of the tourism business? Foreigners who opted to go elsewhere because it is too much of a pain in the ass to get to US visa?

18. I recently read
that there was something like a 32% drop in tourist visitors from Europe so far this year. Attributed to anti-* feelings. I live in a tourist dependent area. It's too soon to even venture a guess on what the impact of gasoline prices will have. Some hotels are offering a free fill up though.

Our annual car show this past weekend seemed jammed. I think there were 600 entries and it was impossible to get through town on normal routes from Friday through Sunday afternoon. I'll have a better idea of how the businesses made out after a meeting next week.
