Mary Cheney Considered Quitting 2004 Campaign Over Gay Marriage Issue
(snip)

When Bush proclaimed it in the State of the Union, she refused to go. Mary Cheney, a senior campaign adviser, was finally taking her stand.

"I didn't want to be there. No one banned me from being there. But I didn't want to stand up and cheer," she said.

She says the president offered to let her give a public statement in disagreement, and her father indicated publicly he disagreed with his boss on the issue. She declined but says she did talk with her family about quitting the campaign.

Cheney has had to deal with hearing hateful names about gays and lesbians from the right wing of her own party. And gay rights activists say that Cheney's silence is just a form of hypocrisy. They even made a milk carton that said, "Mary Cheney Missing."

8. Comfort the afflicted, and afflict the comfortable - not Mary Cheney
She is someone I don't care to hear from on any issue at any time. Ever. And it's not the sins of the father; she likes the wealthy lifestyle she has more than she likes the truth.

6. She is a hypocrite my opinion. Or at least a coward she is in a perfect
position to fight for the rights of others like her and bring attention to their plight and yet she chooses to hide. I think the greatest statement she could have made would have been to stand on the stage with her family as a proud gay person with a family that supported her. Yet her family and her choose to let the moment pass because they didn't want to rub in their loyal followers faces. That's bullshit.

9. One day this form of bigotry, too, will be defeated.
Bigotry, in all its forms, is something that haunts the mind of people, but we are not slaves to it as we have free will and the ability to choose and learn. One day, this form of bigotry will be shown for what it is, and it will be defeated just as other forms of bigotry were defeated in America.

19. Damn you, woman, do not humanize Lynne Cheney! DO NOT!
Actually, I think her version of her coming out to her parents story has to be heavily edited. I will buy what Cheney said to her--I don't think he gives a shit about the social conservatives except as tools to help propagate his personal criminal empire--but I figure she's skipped over years or at least months of Lynne having kittens.

Yeah, you can call her a hypocrite for working on the campaign, etc. But if you ask me her parents are bigger hypocrites, because they're riding a train that they know perfectly well is rolling over their daughter.

Although of course Lynne probably figures none of this will affect Mary because she believes that as long as you have the money and the power, you can break the laws and get away with it. It's all on record in her novel Sisters:

"Sophie pondered a moment why she had been able to remain a member of polite society despite having violated so many of its rules, and she decided the reason was her position. As head of Dymond Publications, she could impose her will on others, and as long as she could do that, the world could not entirely cast her down with its opinions. An insight came to her: this is what men have always known. This is why they can behave privately in ways that violate the public morality and not be ruined. Because they have power." (Sisters, 115)

If I had a radio show I would read that paragraph on air once a day because it's such a perfect statement of the political philosophy that really powers the Cheney juggernaut.

C ya,

The Plaid Adder
