Analysis: Bush's CIA Pick Latest Slammed

By TOM RAUM, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Once again, President Bush may have misjudged the extent of GOP resistance to one of his decisions. His nomination of a four-star general to serve as CIA director has drawn complaints from Republican and Democratic lawmakers alike.

The administration's shake-up, under way since late March, was expected to improve White House dealings with Congress. Yet Bush's selection of Air Force Gen. Michael Hayden to head the troubled spy agency, three days after he announced the resignation of Porter Goss, seems to have caught some top Republicans by surprise.

That includes Rep.Pete Hoekstra of Michigan, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, who said Hayden "is the wrong person at the wrong place at the wrong time."

Bush defended his choice against such criticism, saying Hayden was "the right man to lead the CIA at this critical moment in our nation's history." And most top Republicans voiced support for the nomination.

Funny that's the same thing he said about Goss:

"He knows the CIA inside and out," Bush said of Goss, an eight-term Republican congressman from Florida, a former CIA officer, and until Tuesday, the House intelligence chief . "He is the right man to lead this important agency at this critical moment in our nation's history."

1. When do they recess again?
Beware the recess appointment... avoids all that messy question answering, and no way does the junta want Hayden up for a tough hearing.

2. That's okay though, he has high-profile Democrats to support him:

Helpful Democrats run to Bush's rescue

Numerous Republicans have strongly objected to the president's nomination of Gen. Michael Hayden to be CIA Director, so it's a good thing there are Democrats around like the always-accommodating Dianne Feinstein to help the President out:

Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California -- who sits on the Senate Intelligence Committee -- said she has no objections to Hayden's nomination. "I think the most important thing is that the individual be a competent, qualified, intelligent professional, and Mike Hayden is all of those things."

She said that while she supports a civilian leader of the CIA, "I don't know a civilian that's really as well-connected and competent in the present stage of intelligence in America, and I think that's relevant."

But fortunately for the President, Democratic Rep. Jane Harman is having none of it, as the CNN reports:

Rep. Jane Harman, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, warned against making the wiretapping the focus of hearings.
"His confirmation should not be about whether you're for or against the NSA program," said Harman, D-California. "It should be about whether he's the best man to transform the CIA into the premier clandestine service for the 21st century.
