Richard Cohen is now saying only the "far left" liked Stephen Colbert

But the message in this case truly is the medium. The e-mails pulse in my queue, emanating raw hatred. This spells trouble -- not for Bush or, in 2008, the next GOP presidential candidate, but for Democrats. The anger festering on the Democratic left will be taken out on the Democratic middle. (Watch out, Hillary!) I have seen this anger before -- back in the Vietnam War era. That's when the antiwar wing of the Democratic Party helped elect Richard Nixon. In this way, they managed to prolong the very war they so hated.

The hatred is back. I know it's only words now appearing on my computer screen, but the words are so angry, so roiled with rage, that they are the functional equivalent of rocks once so furiously hurled during antiwar demonstrations.

So, he peeked into a few e-mails and came up with the summation that the far-left hatred is going to backlash on the dems. Stellar journalism. Far-reaching, wide swept conclusion drawn from peaking at a few e-mails...

If he only peeked into a few, how does he know that it was all such a vast outpouring of vituperation? This strikes me as similar to the case when when the WP's howling incompetent Deborah Howell, the so-called "ombudsman", caught an avalanche of criticism when she called Abramhoff a "bi-partisan" scandal. I read most of the email commentary and they were angry but civil for the large majority.* Then the WP shut down the comments blog because they said that the comments were outrageous and obscene and terrifying. This was commented on fairly extensively on Daily Kos.


*(although I do think the word "whore" gets overused. I'm so used to the use of 'media whore', 'press prostitute', etc. that it has no shock value whatsoever to me, but it might be shocking to particular journalists if they are unaware that this is how a large part of the public actually views them. Of course, "whore" in this sense is only meant as the prostituting of one's views and commentary as a hack paid to promote a particular viewpoint.)


This is just one way that the MSM will attempt to marginalize not just the blogosphere, but those who have the temerity to email objections to lazy, un-informed, self-serving commentary. They will just call us "hateful" and "vindictive". I do think any use of obscenity in any email or public comments section dilutes the criticism.
