See ya later, Senator Allen
When is a Senate race more than just a Senate race? When Democrats think they can score a trifecta by beating a Republican incumbent in the South, hobbling him as a possible presidential candidate and boosting the fortunes of one of their White House wannabes. That's the weighty challenge for novice politician Jim Webb, a decorated Vietnam vet and a senior Pentagon official under Ronald Reagan who is challenging Republican Senator George Allen in Virginia.

Webb still has to get through the June 13 Democratic primary, but pragmatists in his party are already tipping him as the man to win in November against the folksy Allen, who is also mulling a run for President in 2008. Allen's continued support for the war in Iraq and for President Bush has hurt his approval ratings, while Webb, a former Marine and an early, articulate critic of the war, has seen his numbers rise. University of Virginia political analyst Larry Sabato says both score about 40% in polls. "Jim Webb is George Allen's worst nightmare: a war hero and a Reagan appointee who holds moderate positions," says Sabato. "Allen tries to project a Reagan aura, but Webb already has it."

Webb has drawn a diverse crowd of supporters. Conservative columnist George F. Will has written an approving article about him, three retired generals have endorsed him, and he has raised thousands of dollars from Hollywood for his campaign. He also seems to have the backing of former Virginia Governor Mark Warner, a moderate Democrat who will probably run for President in 2008. Warner, who initially encouraged businessman Harris Miller to run, has said he will stay neutral before the primary. But he may be changing his bet: he makes his first public appearance with Webb this week, at a fund raiser in Arlington, Va.

1. I am SO supporting Webb
Allen is a fool, a racist, and a thug. We've had enough of him here, and now, along comes Jimmy Webb, with his excellent credentials.

I just don't want Webb to screw it up. Downstate VA is incredibly conservative, but he could win them over.

I'm putting my $$$, support, and vote with Webb.

He is the real deal. I don't agree with him about everything, but my God, what an improvement over that smirking jackass George Allen!

And US flags are hard to find. Allen is a panderer.

34. I've spent some time in Southwestern VA,
and they like heroes and straight-forward people.

I don't think they like to be bullshitted.

I would think Jim Webb would do very well in SW VA.

4. Have you read the New Republic
articles about Allen? I hope they are spread far and wide in Virginia. His racist history will no doubt help him with the rednecks, but the moderates and independents will be looking elsewhere.

Who names his only son after a Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard reponsible for atrocities against black Union soldiers? George Allen, that's who.

14. OK, I found the first article.
Allen is a real piece of work. In addition to racist and bully, you can add "liar" to his resume. The graffiti mentioned in the article was racist. I was there and saw it as did 2500 other students and teachers. What an ass.

39. That first article
really is something.

This guy is a real piece of work. What a twisted person. Holding his sister's feet over Niagra Falls? Abusing his siblings?

And of course there's his whole obsession with the confederate flag. But I recall hearing one post (it might have been on DU) where two black people ran into Allen on what used to be a whites only establishment...Allen replied "it sure has changed around here". What a douche.

Having seen him though on TV, he seems pretty slick though. A real snake oil charmer. I can see a lot of stupid people buying into his BS though - scary.

41. The country club story was posted on DU by
Edited on Thu May-11-06 11:52 AM by LibDemAlways
JaysonB. He had been at the exclusive Palos Verdes Country Club playing golf with David "Deacon" Jones, former LA Rams player, when they ran into Allen who passed the racist remark - all in fun, of course.

I think Allen may well be in deep shit. It hasn't yet come out in the Virginia media that his only son Forrest shares a name with Gen. Nathan Forrest, early Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard responsible for atrocities against black troops. His two daughters also have first names that happen to be surnames of famous Confederates as well. It's one thing to be a student of history. It's another to be completely obsessed. If he had a Hitler fascination, named his kid Adolph, and put swastikas everywhere, he'd never have made it this far. Will be interesting to see how much play this gets.

15. I agree and I'll do some looking as well. We need to get these bigoted
remarks and/or actions posted and out there for all to see.

I live in the state of Virginia, and I cannot even stand to look at Allen on TV.

Allen, Santorum, and DeLay look like the same clone to me in the way they look, speak, and their actions. However, DeLay has a prissy walk?? They all have a smirk look on their face. They appear arrogant and evil at the same time and could look anyone in the eye and lie. I find them physically disgusting whether they were Republican or Democrat. I guess they affect me in that way because I know their beliefs, their pasts, as well as their warped political beliefs, what they believe in their hearts and minds and it is absolutely disgusting to me.

10. Subtle gay-baiting
Hey,

His opponent Mary Sue Terry was an unmarried woman of a certain age, and the Allen campaign really stressed family and showing him with pics of his kids. That part was subtle. Not so subtle was the Allen campaign's success in getting Patricia Cornwell, who had formerly supported Terry, to publicly denounce her in weirdly personal terms. It came across as the bitterness of a woman scorned, but whatever was behind it, Cornwell's last-minute attacks on Terry helped Allen.

in Charlottesville once -- she was such a b-word to the wait staff... just being a total and complete ass. She saw me and the SO glaring at her. I said, "Your Jack the Ripper book was ludicrous. That theory was shot through of holes 20 years ago. Good try, though." She glared. We giggled.

She sucks on many levels... and, I believe, is truly kinda nutys....

28. Allen is useless, Warner tolerable
as a Virginian, I actually can stand John Warner. He voted against the nuclear option and against gov. intervention in the Terri Schaivo affair. He's a repub, but a real one, not one of these corporate stooges.

Allen on the other hand, has voted the way Bush wants like 95% of the time. He has no mind of his own, and no convictions that I can see. I will be working for Webb soon if he wins the primary. When is that anyway?

31. Whoaaa... Look at this from his wiki article
I know it's wikipedia, but it cites George Allen's sister's book.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Allen_(politician)

Allen's younger sister Jennifer Allen alleges in her memoir Fifth Quarter: The Scrimmage of a Football Coach's Daughter that Allen visited sadistic attacks on his younger siblings during his childhood. She claims that Allen held her by her feet over Niagara Falls; struck her boyfriend in the head with a pool cue; threw his brother Bruce through a glass sliding door; tackled his brother Gregory, breaking his collarbone; and dragged Jennifer upstairs by her hair. In the book, she wrote, "George hoped someday to become a dentist . . . George said he saw dentistry as a perfect profession--getting paid to make people suffer."
