making the Chinese money not pegged to the dollar? OK, he's concerned about the trade deficit. But since we get everything from China, the price of nearly everything will go up big since our dollar is on shaky ground.

1. Because its the easy way to fix the trade deficit?
Stop trading because our currency is to weak to buy their goods?

3. There is no easy way to fix the trade deficit
It's entrenched in our trade structure now. Most of the stuff we buy is made in China. It's not like we can start "buying American," or sell more consumer goods to China, because we don't make those things here anymore. So even with a weaker dollar, the trade deficit will not go away. We still have a huge trade deficit with Japan, too.

But in any case, do you really think Bush cares one iota about the trade deficit? I don't.

5. But you can refuse to buy things made in China.
Bamboo products expected. There really aren't that many things in life that can be be acquired from elsewhere.

It took me two years to find a good pair of leather, all-weather books. Now I have a great resource for Canadian boots.

2. And the poor will pay the biggest slice of the difference
It'll be the Wal-Mart shoppers and the dollar store shoppers who get slammed. And that makes Smirky smile.

4. Bush is in a real pickle.
He wants the US low against the yuan, so that China will continue to lend money. He wants the US high against the yuan, so we can maintain purchasing power. There's really no good answer when the US is borrowing shitloads from the world to fund present consumption.
