Does Howard Stern have terrestrial radio swearing off the FCC?
Edited on Wed May-10-06 06:42 PM by joeunderdog
Stern has been saying that he's already had 3 serious (not SIRIUS) offers from terrestrial radio to re-join the mainstream airwaves. What does this mean?

1--Big Radio still wants the money he brought in.
2--He's a guy who's better to have in your foxhole than another station's.
3--That CBS/Clear Channel/et al's support of RW politics and their Family Values Tour might end up being their undoing.
4--They are afraid that if they lose customers to satellite radio, that they won't come back.

Now that BushCo's FCC has neutered terrestrial radio, mainstream radio is realizing that they are in trouble trying to compete against Stern Uncensored. They were in the game when a muffled Stern was their most unfiltered competition, but now that he is doing his thing, Big Radio is running scared. Many people like me who have gone to SIRIUS barely listen to the stations they have been listening to all their lives, and I'm only a moderate Stern fan. I would never have guessed that I would have abandoned Mainstream Radio as completely as I have, and I believe that the industry may also have underestimated this effect. I think, based on horrible ratings, they wonder as an industry if they have made a terrible mistake.

As Stern is so quick to say, "Once again, they have underestimated me."

1. 5) Stern was lying?
Is this a possibility? Didn't he recently make news for being dissapointed with his numbers and claim those who still haven't made the switch to digital were "just being cheap."

2. I believe there is a concerted effort to frame Stern as a failure.
Remember that the same people saying this on TV are part of the media networks losing money and customers to satellite. The media has every agenda to paint this as a failure--it is a threat to their livelihood.

I don't know that Stern has any history of telling lies. I've never heard of it anyway. I know the liburl media does.

4. As a Stern Fan and an owner of satellite radio;

I too listen to only satellite radio ( even gave up NPR). The CBS law suite against Stern has made all of this a no holes barred game. When you ask who may be lying, ask who needs to lie, and it becomes clear. Clear Channel and the religious right have dug a very deep hole for themselves. There is no way I would go back to "free radio", not just because of Stern, but the quality and diversity of programing is far superior.

3. This story came from Mel Karmazin
The news was an exageration of a joke from Stern. Stern was joking that those that didn't follow him can go to hell or something like that and someone made a big story about it.
