Have you ever been on the phone and had your call dropped
Edited on Thu May-11-06 09:55 PM by Blue_Roses
in mid-sentence? Before the Iraq war started, I was talking to a close friend of mine who was in the Air Force, stationed in Japan. I was on a roll about the bullshit reasons Bush was using to start this war and all of a sudden the phone call dropped. I called back but it took a few minutes to get back through. When my friend picked up, we both said, "that was weird," and after that I noticed my friend got silent. In the back of my mind I thought, yeah, they're probably listening, especially, since this person lived on base, but now I have no doubt! It's happened many times since. Go figure...

I don't think this is really a surprise that they have been doing it, however to blatantly admit it does surprise me. It's showing that they clearly are drunk with power and they think they are above the law. That's what's scary.

2. Cell phone? Lots of times.
One thing I've noticed on my Vonage service in the last few months, though, is sometimes there's a loud, high-pitched "chirp" noise sometimes. And sometimes when I answer the phone there's a clicking sound that sounds like a teletype or an old pulse-dialing tone. Not sure what those are about.

11. Creepy.
I've heard that on answering the phone (voip) as well. A juddering sound that I frequently have my hello interrupted by.

I suppose it's mainly the switch from analog to digital...on regular telephone lines calls would get fuzzy or staticky but not drop...with digital once the stream's broken - bam, disconnect.

13. Could be it. Doesn't happen all the time and there's no pattern.

14. I had it happen again today...
and following it was the signal that I had voicemail...I wonder if it's maybe that system that breaks in on the dial tone. It's supposed to be a pulsing dial tone before the steady one where you dial, but maybe it's just glitching.

4. It could have been a phone glitch, especially overseas. Having
said that, it happened recently with my dad. "Hello, hello? I can barely hear you!" We hung up, so I bought him a good phone for Fathers Day. It never occurred to me it could be anything else.

9. Not uncommon
Overseas bases have a pool of outbound lines. If traffic gets overwhelming, the calls have to be prioritized and official business supercedes all.

12. Used to happen to me often enough
I lived in Japan for many years up 'til 2005, had jobs in IT and regular dealings with base phone exchanges. It's possible your call was monitored, but a dropped line is no indication that was happening.

17. No they don't. We are just waking up to the abuse that's
being done to us by this Administration. Much of it is being done with our own taxpayer money.

Are you one of those who is profiting from such tactics?

18. I've heard clicking and static. Sometimes I call and get people
I've never even heard of before. No of this was happening before the war started.

19. All the time, but I don't think that indicates survieiance
It happens sometimes, at least with cell phones, which are almost all anybody uses anymore. I can't remember the last non-business call I've made to somebody's land line. Usually it's a problem with the switch from one tower to another as one is moving, but sometimes it's interference or network congestion.

22. It may be on the airline's end as well
Especially if they do the "this call may be monitored or recorded" thing, the ticking may be a reminder to meet legal requirements on thier end. Certainly the gov't is capable of recording somebody's conversatiosn without making it obvious, I mean they don't actually have to put a bug in your phown or tap your line anymore, especially if what that former AT&T employee says is true and they're doing data mining (and I assume some recording) at the central offices.

Mind, I do think they abolutely are listening in on a shockign number of calls and anybody with an ounce of sense should keep anything they don't want the gov't to know to IRL face-to-face conversation, but to assume that every little fart and burble of the phone line is indicative of wiretapping is both a bit paranoid and indicative of a poor understanding of the technology involved.

23. No "this call may be monitored or recorded thing" - just clicks.
That indicates it's not from their end. It's the government intercepting every call to their airline and listening in/recording. I think the government's tapping the airlines' phones.
