My 79-year old Mother said today...
...when I talked with her on the phone: "I have NEVER in all my years seen such a God awful mess as we have in this country now. I don't know what you guys are gonna do..."

My Mom lived throught the Great Depression. She's seen some bad times so when she says something like this, I find that very disconcerting, to say the least. I dunno WTF we're gonna do either...

I'm going to snatch that...

NO WAY we are crazy. No matter what the pundits (driven by Snow job and Rove) say. Our parents and grandparents were THERE last time some of this crap happened before and they aren't such pollyannas to believe it won't happen again -- only much worse. And, it has.

If we survive this Bush nightmare, we may also be as wise, at such a grand and graceful age as our parents, Triana.

May we be the ones to warn another generation as to the next coming of satan.

13. I'd love to see what the children of the Depression think.
My mother was born in '34. Her father was able to feed the family from his work with the WPA program.
Mom speaks of Bush as THE ASSHOLE. She says he doesn't give a damn for the working class or the poor.
He doesn't. I am so fortunate to still have her around to give me a perspective on humanity in america.

Edited on Fri May-12-06 12:18 AM by Triana
She's a walking history book. She's seen a lot and says this country is more inhumane and cruel than she's ever seen it. Republicans have always been robber-barons but they're more deadly, cold-blooded, and ruthless now than ever before. She calls bu$hit names I won't write here ;) and makes the same type of comments. She's really worried - not for herself, but for us, being left in/with this country like this.

Mother's Day is Sunday. Don't forget your Moms everyone!! :loveya:

I hear alot of what depression-era children experienced and think of the present.
Because of these people know....
America is in some deep shit.
It's all about the quality of jobs and labor, not about those damn tax breaks. These barely touch us.
BusHCo lives in a bubble, far removed from reality.

has lived through it all and it's true what my contemperaries have to say. I feel for the generations that will have to try and pick up the pieces. We depression kids had it far easier then what might come in the future. Some of you here have the answer, fight, vote, tighten your belts and work to get good guys in office; they are out there if you do a lot of careful research and use your intuition. Hint...these days don't look too hard in the Republican camp,

23. I was born in 34, and have memories of hard times.
I can remember things from age 3. My Father had to resort to bootlegging to bring some money in. He had lost his business and had 6 children to feed. Somehow we made it through and never went hungry, thanks to my parents efforts.Around 1940 things began to pick up and when the war started, it was a different world. But my father never stopped preaching politics to all of us and how important it was to be involved. He and Mother loved FDR and worked for his election. All of us have been faithful democrats.Dad told us that both parties would promise a chicken in every pot , but the Dems would at least toss you a wing and you would get nothing from a Pug. This is the worst mess I have ever seen too. Just hope I live long enough to see the whole sorry crowd get theirs in spades.I am still as active as I can be.I hate Bush for ruining so many people.Surely he and the others will have to live many lifetimes in misery and sorrow.

but is somewhat hampered by his second wife (my stepmother) who with the legion of her brothers and sisters is a fundie repug. But he does his best to get his opinion out nonetheless. My Mom, living in a suburb of SLC UT is surrounded by reactionary Mormons and is not happy about it. She loathes Shrub (and Orrin Hatch whom she calls a weasel. My Aunt Janice has always been a Dem. She is 85 and just laughs sardonically at all the repug misdeeds. Her son Randy was a kneeejerk repug but is now a liberal of sorts since he likes Al Franken and Air America He lives in MPLS).

There is a little faction of them - in California of all places, who are either libertarians or Repugs. The rest of us can't even talk to them about politics. They just shut down - won't even discuss it.

during Xmas gatherings (only time I see all that bunch) and sometimes summer. My in-laws by marriage are not as reactionary except for eldest brother-in-law who vowed never to speak to us again if we disparaged the war. But we like his wife who is rather an innocent politically so we agreed to disagree. O yes, some of my wife's cousins are impossible also. These people are nearly all Norwegian-Americans save for a WASP element on my wife's side (she is a DAR member but still a liberal!!). Yes, we are polarized.

19. Both my parents are in their mid 80's
The old man is agnostic and my Mom is in Church three times a week. They both understand what we have to look forward to. It took a little time to get them to understand that corporate media didn't give them real news, but they caught on to the scam pretty quick. I figure I'll do pretty well since I can grow my own food and survive off the grid. If you can do those two things, you stand a chance of surviving.

I asked her how 9/11 compared to Pearl Harbor and she said in many ways 9/11 was worse because there was no sense of "we're in this together, by damn, lets fix it" like there was then. She was most appalled when Bush told us to go shopping after 9/11. Well, no, its hard to say what she is most appalled about. It's all so bad.

35. I'm 70 and I have vivid memories going back to the age of 3.
I well recall the hard times my parents went through to provide just the basics. Small children sitting with their parents listening to FDR's fireside chats. My father going off to fight in a foreign country, while we and all the neighborhood children saved the scraps of tinfoil from cigarette packaging, gum wrappers, tin cans, etc., and Mom leaving early in the morning to work as a riveter for the war effort. Americans united to do what had to be done. It sure wasn't easy but the good times and bad times were shared and their was comfort knowing this. As a small child I would daily pass by homes on my way to school and see the same little blue star flag in the windows that my mother had placed in ours, reflecting that my dad was in the military. I always became extremely depressed when one of the blue stars had turned to gold because I understood that this could well happen to our flag.

Just as the other elders have posted.....this scares the beejeesus out of me....not for myself but for my children and grandchildren. I remember my very first vote went to Gen Eisenhower. I wore the campaign pins and thoroughly enjoyed debating the pros and cons of the Democrats vs Republican platforms......I also remember Eisenhower's warning about the Military Industrial Complex......who knew what true prophet he was? But I don't believe that even Ike could have foreseen the depth of corruption that the US has fallen.

39. My mom tells similar stories.
People didn't have much but they were together and supported each other. Now? Huh. When the war was over the women (riveters) were sent back home to let the guys have the jobs. She tells about pigs and chickens and growing their own food. They didn't have much Christmas either. Because of that, Mom always did big Christmases at our house when we were kids. She doesn't anymore - no one there and too much work but she always said that was why she was big on Christmas and Thanksgiving. She didn't want us to have 'poor' ones like she did when she was little.
