2.7 Pay Raise too much for the Military (Bush Administration)

White House Opposes Parts of Defense Bill

By LIZ SIDOTI

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration does not see a need to increase the size of the armed forces right now. It believes that 2.7 percent is too much of a pay raise for the military. And it does not want to maintain its current fleet of 12 aircraft carriers.

On a 396-31 vote Thursday, the House approved a $512.9 billion military bill that includes those provisions and others that the White House and the
Pentagon could do without.

The bill addresses lawmakers' concerns arising from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, from combating makeshift roadside bombs to equipping more vehicles and troops with armor. The measure also includes a plan to spend $50 billion for the first part of next year's war costs.

Overall, the bill sets Defense Department policies and plans spending for the military for the budget year that begins Oct. 1. Actual money will come in separate legislation later this year.

2. I think you are worth as much or more than these guys .....

"It pays quite well. There's a lot of contracts that pay anywhere from $350 a day to $1,500 a day," said Chris Boyd of Kroll-Crucible Security. (Iraq Security Contractor)"

Why shouldn't a professional soldier representing his country be worth $100,000 per year.
That's what a School Board Superintendant makes in Canada for taking care of a district
budget. Not exactly a dangerous occupation.

3. soldier huh....dude, i served for 10 years.....no one, and i mean no one..
.....was happy with the annual raises, but no one ever questioned that they didn't deserve them...this "raise" is to match the inflation rate and the salary rate of the civilian sector...a cost of living increase if you will. even at 2.7 percent, you are being cheated out of about 2.3 to 2.8% annualy. so what you are telling us here is that you are happy to be getting shot at for less pay than you made last year...that makes no sense to me, but then again i am not getting shot at any more....maybe it's more fun these days. btw, that 2.7 percent also covers your variable housing allowence, money for off base food, pro pay, hazard pay, sea pay if you are a sailor...pretty much every aspect of your pay. if you are a soldier, you deserve every raise you get...you are certainly entitled to it, but if you don't want them annualy, better hit the books for the next advancement cycleand hope you do well enough to make rate.....

5. Welcome to DU David
You deserve more pay. Should you be asking for it? I would say you should be demanding it!

4. The cons in congress blocked military raises during Clinton's term too.
