ABC Poll on NSA phone surveillance.

"Phone-Records Surveillance Is Broadly Acceptable to Public"

"May 12, 2006 — Americans by nearly a 2-1 ratio call the surveillance of telephone records an acceptable way for the federal government to investigate possible terrorist threats, expressing broad unconcern even if their own calling patterns are scrutinized.

Lending support to the administration's defense of its anti-terrorism intelligence efforts, 63 percent in this ABC News/Washington Post poll say the secret program, disclosed Thursday by USA Today, is justified, while far fewer, 35 percent, call it unjustified."

To top it off they have the story wrong, 1300 say "No" and 300 say "Yes":

3. How about this story
saying that government lawyers said that Americans gave their consent for wiretapping. Who the hell are they kidding. I did not give them my consent.

these people should be removed now.

4. Not to be an apologist for the MSM, but
I believe the poll they commissioned and the web poll are seperate pieces. The figures they quote on the air are from the more scientific of the polls.

Of, course, I may be wrong. It's been known to happen

5. Here it is:
DO YOU AGREE?
Is it okay for the government to track phone calls made by you and millions of other Americans?

No, it is not acceptable no matter what the government says.

1,330
Yes, if the government says it is necessary to fight terrorism.

16. Can't be the same poll they're pointing to
In the piece it is a 65% ratio saying yes. But in the one you're showing, it is 19% (rounded) yes. Even if it's switched, it is 81%.

But I agree that the poll they're using was probably commissioned by the WH with pre-approved phone numbers.

32. I think they're referring to a phone poll (below), not the online one. But
... when you go to it, you see nothing:

Click the link titled "Complete Results of Phone Records Surveillance Poll" and you'll go to:
http://abcnews.go.com/images/Politics/abc_phone_surveillance_060512.pdf

But all I see is a white screen, even AFTER Acrobat opens.

This poll is dated today. Something tells me they're "re-assessing".

35. HERE'S THE POLL. Found it on Washington Post's page:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/polls/postpoll_nsa_051206.htm

Not that I buy it.

For one thing, it's awfully soon. The poll question is probably the first most respondents even heard of the issue.

And then there's the way it was asked:
"It's been reported that the National Security Agency has been collecting the phone call records of tens of millions of Americans. It then analyzes calling patterns in an effort to identify possible terrorism suspects, without listening to or recording the conversations. Would you consider this an acceptable or unacceptable way for the federal government to investigate terrorism?"

What if they asked THIS question?:
"It's been reported that the National Security Agency has been following tens of millions of Americans. It then analyzes the places they go and who they see in an effort to identify possible terrorism suspects, without listening to or recording their conversations. Would you consider this an acceptable or unacceptable way for the federal government to investigate terrorism?"

How many people do you think would answer that this were acceptable?

The principle is the same.
If it were feasible to follow tens of millions of Americans, they'd be doing it as we speak. No doubt they're already following thousands of Americans around, with no reasoable grounds to suspect anything.

Bush said they're not "trolling". This program is by DEFINITION trolling!

Edited on Fri May-12-06 08:20 AM by Brotherjohn
... when you jump to it, nothing's there.

(See "Complete results of Phone Records Surveillance Poll" at left, jumps to an alleged PDF at http://abcnews.go.com/images/Politics/abc_phone_surveillance_060512.pdf)

I wonder if they're not already back-tracking due to a few thousand phone calls they may have gotten themselves.

24. And anyway, they always qualify such questions with things like "to fight
... terrorism".

It's a simple YES or NO question. The qualifier influences the answer.

The only TNS I could find was a business research company. If that is who they are, hmmmmm, why would ABC/WP go to them instead of a more mainstream polling company?

30. Media networks (ie. rich white male racists) are trying to make spying
mainstream.

They have been slowly leaking the spying information to the public and controlling what we know about it and what we don't.

They are incrementally trying to condition us to accept it.

They are wanting us to accept the predatory stalking of all areas of our lives as "mainstream".
This "mainstream" propaganda is called prison and enslavement.
