2. I thought about this, too
Maybe we could claim a breach of contract because they violated their own privacy policy?

Disclosure of Personally Identifiable Information
We enable you to control how and if we disclose your personally identifiable information to other persons or entities, except as required by law or to protect the safety of customers, employees or property or except when we share such information with agents, affiliates, suppliers, vendors, consultants and contractors who use it to provide or support our products and services.

Subject to these exceptions, we will share your personally identifiable information with persons or entities outside the company only when you have consented.

An example of when we would disclose personally identifiable information to an outside person or entity is when we are served with a subpoena for customer information. In such cases, we are required to release the information. Another example would be if we share personally identifiable information with other carriers and/or with law enforcement to prevent and investigate fraud and other unlawful use of communications services. A third example would be if we share with our affiliates personally identifiable information related to products or services you currently receive from them or us.

15. potential loophole for Verizon
According to the WashPost (citing USA Today):

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/11/AR2006051100539_pf.html

According to USA Today, the telephone companies are removing the names and addresses of their customers from the records they give the NSA.

Verizon could claim that no "personally identifying info" has been turned over.

But, the next sentenct in the article continues:

But the government has many means of identifying account owners, including access to commercial databases from ChoicePoint and LexisNexis.

Either way, the Verizon contract is OVER!!!! Be it this week, or when the term is up . . .

That'd mess up the "IN NETWORK".

4. I called their VP, Corporate Communications yesterday
Jim Gerace, (908) 306-7508
james.gerace@verizonwireless.com

The Corporate Comms or Public relations departments are outward facing. It's certainly better to call them than the anonymous 'customer service' line. If you call a VP, your anger will get communicated to the executive level.

23. Thank You, AllieB, I'm mad as HELL-needed that #....calling tomorrow!!
Their illegalities vis a vis our Constitutional 4th Amendment rights should waive any contracts we have w/ these back stabbing traitors of their paying customers.

My landline is w/ QWest, but some time ago, QWest sold their wireless division to Sprint, who I've read have ALSO sold us out to our Fascist Gov't!!

9. Break your contract.
You need a lot more people to do it for Verizon to feel the pain though.

I've made up my mind. When I get another cell, I'm using Cingular unless I find out they're also disgusting evil tyrants.

13. Verizon Sucks
I could tell you a real horror story about them--a $3K+ phone bill. They have always been the only game in town in our area. A total monopoly for local service.

But there is another company that is advertising here now for local service and long distance, that I've been thinking of investigating. However, they would still have to be leasing phone lines from Verizon. Does anyone know how that works? For smaller companies that do leased lines from the biggies, is there a way the bigs could still track your phone records for NSA?

Saying your planning to join a class action lawsuit. So they can either let you out of the contract now, or return your money to you later.

17. Thats what i just did
wrote them a nice healthy email.

Said " either you let me out of my contract now, or I will join a class-action lawsuit against Verizon/Verizon Wireless for breach of Privacy Policies, FCC regulations, and The Constituation of the United States of America. "

20. joke, just a joke
I have not been this riled up in, I dunno, days(?) . . .

And adding fuel to the fire:

http://www.usatoday.com/money/companies/2006-05-11-biz-privacy-usat_x.htm

WHAT THE PHONE COMPANIES HAVE TO SAY

Statements from the three telephone companies that USA TODAY reported helped the National Security Agency collect records of domestic phone calls without court authorization.

AT&T
"AT&T has a long history of vigorously protecting consumer privacy. Our customers expect, deserve and receive nothing less than our fullest commitment to their privacy.
"We also have an obligation to assist law enforcement and other government agencies responsible for protecting the public welfare, whether it be an individual or the security interests of the entire nation.
"We prize the trust our customers place in us. If and when AT&T is asked to help, we do so strictly within the law and under the most stringent conditions. Beyond that, we don't comment on matters of national security."

BellSouth
"BellSouth does not provide any confidential customer information to the NSA or any governmental agency without proper legal authority."

Verizon
"We do not comment on national security matters, we act in full compliance with the law, and we are committed to safeguarding our customers' privacy."

National security?!?!?!? You have got to be kidding me . . .
