Tommy Thompson will either run for Gov or Senate in WI (maybe)
says he will make decision on Sunday, but says he is certain he could win either race. If he does run it will make it more difficult for either Kohl or Gov. Doyle. I think a Kohl-Thompson race would be 50-50, but Thompson probably could beat Doyle (which would be a real grudge match). I can't explain why but Thompson is very popular in this state having been elected governor a record four times and even his association with Bush doesn't seem to be hurting him.

Heard this on the radio this morning so no link. I would love to beat the SOB, but I would just as soon he stayed out, but being the egomaniac he is, he will probably run.

2. Are you sure he still maintains the same popularity after his stint
in Washington? I certainly didn't think he did a very admirable job while he was there!

5. One poll they cited showed Thompson beating Doyle by over
twenty points.

12. Stratgetic Vision is a conservative pollster, #1
And #2, the press hasn't had cause to very publically examine his work over the past 6 years. This ego trip gets rolling and Thompson's popularity will tank.

Still, I hope the pukes put all their eggs in his basket. He'll be easier to take down than Green.

14. I believe St. Norbert's also had him ahead, but not by as big
a margin.

8. You make a fine point - Tommy Thompson WAS popular in WI
I can't imagine he has a chance now. All his opponents have to do is point to his record as HHS secretary and he'll spend the whole campaign on defense.

Not to mention the fact that he and his residual administration left Wisconsin with a huge deficit that we're still trying to pay for.

Anyone who thinks Tommy has a shot is dreaming - including the egomaniacal Thompson

13. don't count on it
for some reason Doyle doesn't resonate well with voters. Every time Tommy ran I thought this time we will beat him, but he always wins in the end and usually handily. I don't expect he would by a landslide but if it's him and Doyle I think Thompson would be the hands on favorite--but if this is truly a Democratic year such a race would be one to watch and maybe disgust with the GOP would be enough to defeat him.

19. Doyle would have beat Thompson
His popularity as AG was just as high and he actually can string 5 words together coherently. This year, Doyle has a good record including being strong on fiscal responsibility. Thompson has what? A girlfriend. A couple of alcohol laden public appearances. A screwed up HHS department. An air of competency that smells a lot like manure when you get close. Yeah, it's been awhile since anyone has heard anything about him and people forget. But politicians don't forget. I am not afraid of Tommy Thompson. I say bring him on.

Doyle's holding his cards close to the vest and saving his money for the real race. He won't be hurt by letting the underdog meme take root. He won't be hurt by letting the puke party tear itself apart (Green v. Thompson). He know Thompson won't be hard to beat. He's had four years to examine the evidence.

As for Kohl, he got more votes in 1998 than Thompson and Kohl had a credible challenger.

And I disagree that Doyle doesn't resonate. He impressed my O'Reilly watching mom when he visited her workplace a few years ago. If he can get her to say something nice about him, I think he'll manage.

6. My guess is he is hoping everyone has forgotten the mess he left
after all those years as Gov. I don't think they have, but there is no way to underestimate the memory of the electorate.

7. Yes, that's true
for some reason Doyle hasn't really been able to resonate with voters either, maybe because he is so low key.

10. Senate makes no sense at all.
He would only be doing that for the party, but Tommy doesn't do stuff just for the sake of the party. He wants something out of it. Governor makes a lot more sense.

Would those be Diebold machines counting the votes?

17. Paper ballots are required in Wisconsin
Though we have a few nefarious companies counting those ballots. But at least we have ballots for verification and recounts.

21. Yeah, CWD is here precisely because of Tommy Thompson
Edited on Fri May-12-06 09:57 AM by sybylla
His administration relaxed the rules surrounding transportation of animals across state line after the game farm owners made a few large donations to his campaign.

I knew a guy who used to be an animal health inspector for the state. He retired just as CWD was hitting the state and he had nothing nice to say about the Thompson administration.

P.S. I heard that too. There was something about it on Washington Journal this morning as well.
