Children left behind
Edited on Fri May-12-06 10:06 AM by MelissaB
Is this our chance to get rid of No Child Left Behind? If it is, let's organize the grassroots and get rid of this beast.

NEA Urges Members to Share Views on NCLB

NEA is encouraging members to let a new independent commission know what they think about the No Child Left Behind Act and how the federal education law is impacting what happens in classrooms.

With the goal of influencing the upcoming 2007 reauthorization of the federal No Child Left Behind law, a bipartisan and independent Commission on No Child Left Behind was recently launched with high level leadership -- and supporters.

...snip

Joel Packer, NEA's manager for ESEA/NCLB policy, said he is optimistic that a classroom teacher will be named to the Commission. He also said, "We look forward to working with the Commission and are optimistic it will conduct an objective and thorough analysis of NCLB and propose changes in both its regulations and the law itself."

Packer said NEA is encouraging its members to let the Commission know their views on NCLB and its impact in classrooms around the country by taking advantage of the Commission's interactive "comments" page on its Web site.

11. I wish DUers cared as much about public ed
as they do about the latest movie, Jason Leopold, etc..

If this were a thread bashing teachers, instead of pointing out the opportunity to make a substantial difference for the entire nation of young people by getting rid of high-stakes testing, perhaps it would be getting more play.

I don't think we can get rid of it yet. We need a Dem majority again.

9. This doesn't fly with me.
Why would I think that a dem majority would suddenly change their stance and oppose this piece of shit legislation that they've been supporting with their votes from the beginning?

They are already complicit in the destruction of public education that has already occurred, and is occurring now, because they have supported it all along.

We need to demand that they take a stand now, majority or not. Some of us have been doing so since it was first introduced in congress, but apparently not enough of us to be taken seriously.

5. So if this has to be renewed in 2007, doesn't it mean we can
non-renew it? Am I being too hopeful here?
