T-Mobile states it has not participated with any warrant-less NSA program
Edited on Fri May-12-06 11:14 AM by bushmeat
Looks like I will be dumping Verizon for T-Mobile, my contract is up with Verizon anyways.

T-Mobile, the fourth-largest U.S. wireless provider, also said it has not worked with the government: "T-Mobile is not a participant in any NSA program for warrant-less surveillance and acquisition of call records," a spokesman for the Deutsche Telekom (nyse: DT - news - people ) company said in an e-mail. "T-Mobile has not provided any such access to communications or customer records."

yuck, forbes, via google news (turn-on your popup blocker / firefox adbock extension before going there):

T-mobile is a wholly owned subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom

I used Qwest for my land lines and T-Mobile for by Cell/Blackerry.

But then Bush/Cheney then probably ASSUME I'm a Terrorist.

3. What about Cingular? Did they participate?
I don't remember them being in the list.

5. They are owned by AT&T
And remember, wireless providers who deny involvement but are owned by carriers that did cooperate, like Verizon wireless, could still have had wireless records transferred by their parent company.

12. No, that isn't true.
Not that the truth is much better. SBC owns 60% of Cingular, and Bellsouth owns the other 40%. Cingular Wirelss aquired AT&T wireless, not the other way around. AT&T, the phone company, is not the same as AT&T the wireless company (which is no longer, it is a part of Cingular).

It's all academic, because Bellsouth and SBC both complied with the NSA's request.

A revival of the AT&T Wireless brand is definite as BellSouth's 40% ownership of Cingular Wireless will be transferred to AT&T (the primary impetus behind AT&T's acquisition of BellSouth was to acquire the remainder of Cingular, which was the two companies' largest single revenue source in 2005).

19. That is bizarre.
I was "forced" to leave AT&T because I upgraded my service. I had a digital cell phone, and I kept using it well after the Cingular merger. I went to add two lines to it when we dropped our land lines, and I was told that AT&T no longer supported digital phones in Connecticut, so I'd have to cancel them and get new GMS service under a Cingular contract. Which I did. No cash changed hands, they just (supposedly) migrated my service over to Cingular and gave me new phones. Within two weeks I got a call from AT&T Collections Department demanding payment, saying I left an outstanding balance. This was collections, mind you...I hadn't even received a bill from Cingular for my first month's service, and AT&T Wireless was already after me for leaving an unpaid balance, which Cingular said would all be transferred to my new account. AT&T claimed they knew nothing about Cingular, that they were AT&T and they only cared about what I owed AT&T. The people I first spoke with were rude, nasty, threatening and didn't care in the slightest about the merger of the company they were working for. I spoke to a supervisor who eventually admitted that yes, she was actually in the same building as Cingular. "But they call us 'the Blue Floor' you know, because AT&T's logo is blue." But that was only after three phone calls and lots of nasty exchanges.

Since I got that straigtened out, though, I hate to admit it, but Cingular has been the best cell service I've had. It even works out in the woods at our camp, where no else's service does. I have to rethink all this now, and if I have a leg to stand on if I chose to leave them. I still have almost a year before my two-year contract is up.

Network but punish the provider. I don't care so much about shared networks since I am not doing anything illegal but want to punish those that gave away my private information.

From this article:

Cingular, VoiceStream to Share Wireless Networks in New York, California and Nevada

http://www.t-mobile.com/company/PressReleases_Article.aspx?assetName=Prs_Prs_20011015&title=Cingular,%20VoiceStream%20to%20Share%20Wireless%20Networks%20in%20New%20York,%20California%20and%20Nevada

Before I transfer my old number (and before TM's money back grace period is up) I am going to make sure my new phone works at home / work etc and then transfer my number.

4. Hey, if up-the-chain providers do participate, this may mean nothing
I don't know, and I'm not sure anyone else does either at this point. But if someone renting a network doesn't participate and the corp renting out the network does, the smaller corp not participating may not matter one whit.

In my case (and most here) this is a right-to-privacy issue and we are punishing the perps of this national crime.

10. Pre-paid with a Virgin phone would be the best way to go but...
if you need a permanent number because you are on-call (like me) then for now it looks like T-Mobile is the second-best choice.

We need to have a concerted effort to remove ourselves from the "spy" companies rolls. Please everyone - do not support these companies!

15. The question is, can you use "breach of contract" to break off from them?
I don't know about you, but my contract has a $175 cancellation fee. Most do. But if you can make the case that THEY breached the contract, then can you split? You can just leave and ignore the bills for the $175 they send you, and/or object to them when/if they appear on your credit card, but you know the fuckers will still but it on your credit report. It's a tough issue. You have to weigh a lot of factors. Not the least of which is, how can you really be sure that your new carrier hasn't also been compromised by the NSA? I trust nothing any of these bastards say anymore. Nothing. Not a word. If you're a big corporation in American today, I start with the assumption that you're lying to me.
