Audible beep after phone rings

Yesterday, while I was trying to call my wife, I noticed that each time after the phone would ring in the receiver, it would be followed by an audible beep. It was the same kind of beep you would normally hear for a "call waiting". I thought it was odd. Anyone know what this might be? I have noticed it from time to time before, without ever giving it much thought in the past, now I'm not so sure I shouldn't be concerned.

I'm sure in Germany the citizens started thinking they were paranoid, then realized...they weren't.

On Edit: I was worried and pissed before about everything going on in this Country, now add a little freaked out.

Ok, good, it would seem I can return to being pissed and annoyed about my usual stuff instead.
