Perch=Barsch auf Deutsch Where can I find the original German...

transcript of Bush's fish story? I have looked everywhere. Did not buy Bild am Sonntag last week.

My experience is that the terms are never '=' in German and English, especially not for plants and animals. Similar, but almost never equal.


The Bild story said "Barsch", the English transcript - which probably is more original than Bild's translation, "Bass". Fact is that Bass is very often mistranslated as "Barsch" and that some Bass types are indeed called "Barsch".

Another fact is: it doesn't matter. The "best moment was catching a fish" already is the best possible line; details just make one appear malicious.

But the European vultures are not the same as the American birds by that name. The term describes different, but similar, birds.

Barsch = perch. But Seebarsch = common bass.

There is no German transcript; the interview was in English and translated. The original English reports were translated back from the German, always a dangerous practice.

I never could get a fix on whether native speakers of German would require "ich einen Siebeneinhalb-Pfund-Seebarsch aus meinem See geangelt habe" to get 'common bass' as the meaning or if having the Barsch removed from the "See" in the same clause was sufficient. Compare English "I pulled a 2 lb lake trout out of the lake" versus "I pulled a 2 lb trout out of the lake."
