LTTE: Time to Resign
Edited on Fri May-12-06 01:07 PM by sparosnare
I submitted this to my local newspaper this morning:

Time to Resign

I think you may have forgotten, Mr. Bush, but the United States of America has a Constitution that contains a Bill of Rights. This document makes our country different from others because it protects “We the People” from intrusion by its government – a government that was elected at the will of the people. A government that does not have a right to do as it pleases, even in the name of protection.

I am deeply disturbed that every time you decide to break a law or thumb your nose at our rights, you say it’s because of the terrible tragedy of 9/11 and that you’re doing it in the name of national security. That excuse isn’t working anymore Mr. Bush.

When you assumed the office of President, you took an oath. In case you don’t remember the words, here they are:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of

President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve,

protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States – that’s the bottom line. When you decided it was necessary to ignore your oath of office and circumvent the Constitution, regardless of the reason, you violated the trust and rights of the people.

You haven’t kept your end of the bargain Mr. Bush, and it’s time you resign as President. I think most Americans would agree.

5. Thanks - it came from the gut.
I didn't want it to be too specific and didn't want it to be partisan. :hi:

6. Excellent letter!
Even the most feeble-minded of We The People can understand the crux of this matter as written in your letter. Thank you for the public service. I hope your local paper publishes it, and that you would consider submitting it to the NY Times, Washington Post, etc. etc.

8. One caveat-I learned the hard way-some papers have an exclusivity clause
in other words, they want to be the only ones publishing the letter.I had a chance to have a letter published in both the Post and the Boston globe, but it had been published in my local paer first.Bummer...just FYI.

9. That's good to know.
I haven't received word yet from my local paper, so if I submit to the big guns, I guess I can choose which one. :hi: (here I am assuming they'll all want it!)

14. He has spit on The Constitution, the very purpose of his office.
He is in office to protect our rights.Only the Congress can declare war. He has usurped power from the Congress and broken his oath of office. He should be resign immediately. I so agree with you.
