ICANN rejects .xxx domain
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, the group that sets domain name regulation, has voted down a proposal to create a domain for adult Web sites.

ICANN's board on Wednesday voted 9 to 5 against the proposal, which would have led to the creation of a .xxx domain suffix for pornography sites.

The plan has drawn considerable controversy over recent months, with conservative groups campaigning against the domain due to concerns that it would legitimize pornography. Advocates of the plan have denied this, claiming that it would make it easier for Web users to avoid porn.

Eh... I thought it was a good idea.

3. It makes a lot of sense to me. What would be the downside of
an .xxx domain?

8. there was no provision to make the change
mandatory, many x sites did`t want to change to xxx, and of course the usa who has the biggest say so about what goes on on the net. those fundies would go ape shit if they lost the issue and had to admit the xxx would be easy to filter. to bad these creeps don`t want to raise their children so they won`t go to x sites..i mean after all, these are the people who don`t want a "nanny state" to raise their kids. hypocrites are`t they?

4. I thought it would be great money for ICANN, also.
Plus, it would make a lot of filtering quite streamlined.

Too bad. Maybe it will be put up again later. If it was just conservative pressure that caused them to back off, the conservatives may just be too busy soon to bother with this small stuff.

5. BushCo's XXX crusade may have something suprising to do with this.
I believe one line of thinking at ICANN is if they make an XXX domain then Boosh and cronies will introduce a law that any "objectionable" material be posted only on .xxx domain sites. And you know that's going to include far more than people having intercourse. What about the tattoo or piercing sites? What about sites which cover "the homosexual lifestyle".

It's a slippery slope and ICANN knows it.

6. afraid that it would "legitimize pornography???"
Just who the HELL are they kidding? Why the hell do they think there's so much porn out there that it needs its own domain?

I'd have thought the main opposition would come from smut peddlers who were afraid that being ghettoized at an .xxx would DElegitimize it.

I don't "get" porn, and I'm the first to admit it. However, I don't believe there is any such thing as a victimless crime. Either you have a victim, or there is no crime. I'm all for having consenting grownups do with their lives whatever they want to, which includes producing and buying porn.

ICANN is being stupid.

7. More twisted Fundie "logic"
They oppose this because it would 'legitimize' pornography, like they think abortion encourages sex.

9. Sounded like a good idea
It's easier for people to block content from their browser, it doesn't legitimize anything really.

10. ICANN jumped the shark on this one....
They reaffirmed they are a "political" body and not a benevolent "oversight" body.

Buh-buy ya morons...
