Rove Informs White House He Will Be Indicted
By Jason Leopold
t r u t h o u t | Report

Friday 12 May 2006

Within the last week, Karl Rove told President Bush and Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten, as well as a few other high level administration officials, that he will be indicted in the CIA leak case and will immediately resign his White House job when the special counsel publicly announces the charges against him, according to sources.

Details of Rove's discussions with the president and Bolten have spread through the corridors of the White House where low-level staffers and senior officials were trying to determine how the indictment would impact an administration that has been mired in a number of high-profile political scandals for nearly a year, said a half-dozen White House aides and two senior officials who work at the Republican National Committee.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, sources confirmed Rove's indictment is imminent. These individuals requested anonymity saying they were not authorized to speak publicly about Rove's situation. A spokesman in the White House press office said they would not comment on "wildly speculative rumors."

Rove's attorney, Robert Luskin, did not return a call for comment Friday.

(snip)

Late Thursday afternoon and early Friday morning, several White House officials were bracing for the possibility that Fitzgerald would call a news conference and announce a Rove indictment today following the prosecutor's meeting with the grand jury this morning. However, sources close to the probe said that is unlikely to happen, despite the fact that Fitzgerald has already presented the grand jury with a list of charges against Rove. If an indictment is returned by the grand jury, it will be filed under seal.

Rove is said to have told Bolten that he will be charged with perjury regarding when he was asked how and when he discovered that covert CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson worked for the agency, and whether he discussed her job with reporters.

:)

Hee.

175. Well, I gotta think the producers of the sunday talk shows will
want the story if it is really out there.

I gotta believe if Leopold is right and has 8 people who are willing to tell him that someone will crack the story to another reporter and we'll hear about it.

The Sunday talking heads would never let a story like this simmer all weekend, only to wait another week before they "talk" about it.

Makes no sense.

381. Wow! K&R I agree. There is no way that they will ignore something this big
They'll have an entire lineup of people ready to speculate on it, whether it's been officially announced, or not. And that's really as it should be. It's breaking news and it's HUGH. By next week, the facts should be out and they'll discuss it some more. For once, it's good news for us. Finally...:woohoo:

377. I don't think the Sunday talk shows will cover this
YET... until the indictment is handed up and/or Fitzy calls his press conference. Right now, this revelation is 'reported on liberal blogs and alternative media on the Internets' and will not rise to the level of MSM coverage-- excluding KO, of course.

However, once it goes down, they will indulge themselves in a feeding frenzy. That's why Chimp is making his 'bold' initiative of armed guards on the borders.... the WH believes the indictment is coming next week and wants a 'major story' on a WH initiative to share air time with this very damaging Rove story.

I could be wrong, but I don't think we're going to see this in the MSM until it happens. Then.. BOOM.

Also never paid more than $40 a bottle for good Champagne. The above are about $200 each.

Fitz may well hit Rove with charges for the leak to Blusterbutt who wrote the first story outing Plame, and a whole ream of other stuff, including perjury, obstuction, treason, etc., etc., etc.

Yeah, Fitz is slow. That apparently is his M.O. But he wins. Because he leaves no stone unturned.

When Fitz brings an indictment, it sticks. The bastards go to prison.

400. The Statement itself doesn't bother me.
We rely on the fact that the "Fourth Estate" is there to catch anyone in politics that would dare to go down that road. The fact that the back road exists isn't the fault of the reporter.

One thing that saddens me is that our Forefathers lived in a time when an honest man's word was his bond, so if the press and the people knew a person lied, that would be the end of their political career.

So to say that a politician getting caught in a lie is a different thing, end of story is an incomplete analysis in this day and age.

411. Back up Scooby Doo. The Statement is simply fact. I explained more...
so your tone is out of line.

The Ten Commandments go back a long time and they allude to "Not bearing false witness" so it isn't as if dishonesty is a new invention.

Am I bothered by dishonesty? Yes!

But the statement isn't condoning the lie as I read it. It is about a reporter knowing that one has to uncover the lie and bring it to the people and WE have to raise a fuss about it.

It is disturbing to realize how pervasive all the lies are that we DON'T know about if that's what you mean.

But the statement made by Leopold isn't giving lying pols a free ride. It's about putting their nastiness out in the light and letting it be inspected as they squirm in their un-comfortableness. It's about the power of the press to DO something about lying politicians.

356. Leopold can afford to be patient now.
That limb he was out on six weeks ago is getting shorter by the minute. From what I've read, there is little that Leopold has said which cannot be verified once things actually start happening in public, so if he covered his bases well, he will soon be vindicated.

My own predictions, unfortunately, were wrong. I had the indictment pegged for last week, but it occurs to me that Fitzgerald has delayed his public moves when other news stories have threatened to steal the limelight--I think he has even admitted as such.

Even if he continues to be *ush's brain, so what?

Even better as far as I'm concerned. *ush is half way to insane as it is, if Karl wants to try to think for him from the pokey, it could get better for our side. As long as the other prisoners don't teach him anything he doesn't already know.

He'll probably spend his time in the workout room shedding pounds so when he tries to make a comeback, he'll look so different he will be convinced the public will forget his little forays. That's how they do it in TX. A lot of their politicians have been indicted and served time.

and I can pretty much guarantee ya that IF KKKarl were to end up in a normal facility like the rest of us are sent to (which he won't as long as Dubya holds power), he would not bloody likely get to do anything he enjoys in the weight pit....

A dear friend of mine was just released after serving 29 years doing hard time in MI for a wrongful double-murder conviction when he was 17, and I remember how many times he told me in letters what the weight pit scene was like. I had rather different experiences because I was in minimum security facilities and ones for women, except for the last one before my release, which was a co-ed, former-motel, pre-release facility. Even in those less threatening institutions, however, one had to be pretty damn brave to venture into the weight pit.

In Jay's maximum-security experience, it was worse than any scene I ever saw done by Hollywood. Few documentaries even begin to capture the harsh, brutal reality of it -- simply because the "keepers" won't allow that sort of thing to be filmed.

What most people have no clue about is that C.O.'s (or as most of us call them, guards) in prison are NOT there to prevent inmate-on-inmate violence. They have to keep a lid on it to a certain extent, but as long as they are not losing control of the quads, they simply look the other way when certain inmates endure hellish punishments at the hands of others. Some guards participate in abuse, but most don't have to -- they can just sit back and watch it develop on its own in an environment where animal prowess and brute strength and wiles rule the roost.

Naw, if KKKarl were to find himself in a serious prison, he would likely not live long just because of his appearance. If he were arrogant to boot, well... you can just imagine how most of those hardcore criminal types would take offense at that....

Bush's brain would find other parts of his anatomy interested most of his fellow inmates far more. If they would even stoop to touching him -- but then, ya see, life is a totally different thing on the Inside. Degrading someone else, no matter how "untouchable" he might seem to us, could be a sign of sheer gut fortitude among prisoners.

It's hard to say exactly what would happen, and it's an indictment of our prison system, btw, and perhaps others of us (self included) that everyone from cops to prosecutors to good ole Amurkin citizens likes to ponder the rapes and beatings of inmates that are rampant and unchecked. That sort of stuff simply should not be happening in our prisons, but them's the facts, ma'am, just the facts.

I know I'm late getting into this thread, but I'm reading it just for my own personal dee-light, and thought I'd throw in my own little contribution while I was at it. Hah!

Since Bush has assured us that he'll fire anyone who broke the law in the Plame case.

231. He felt no one broke the law
because he is the one who tried to make it so the information was no longer classified and he was the one who ordered she be outed.

He knew he would never have to fire anyone who broke the law because now he thinks he can just make any law he wishes.

If they indict Rove that would be great news. With the NSA spying, the CIA corruption and now Rove indicted I can't see Bush's 20 something approval ratings going any higher. Not looking good.

273. Exactly
We'll see what happens (or not) on Monday.

To me, this whole story doesn't make any sense.

We have supposedly eight sources, all of them are Republican, and assuming these sources exist and gave those quotes, these Republicans (whose asses aren't on the line) are to be believed over Luskin, who has much more at stake: namely his client's and his own butt. You think those two aren't going to be on their best behavior? I've heard reports Rove has been very cordial and pleasant lately - instead of his usual nasty self.

Of course, Leopold and Pitt have everything to gain if they can secure the scoop of the decade.

Leopold so far has said there was a target letter, then said it was a month old, now we're talking about sealed indictments (which would have been reported and the frogmarch already occurring)... I mean, what's it going to be? Look at it close and it all seems to fall apart.

I do believe Karl will be indicted, but until it happens, it's all just hype.

CIA Leak Quotes

Some of the denials, other comments, at media briefings by White House spokesman Scott McClellan when asked by reporters whether President Bush's top political adviser, Karl Rove, was involved in the leak of a CIA officer's identity:
Sept. 29, 2003

Q: You said this morning, quote, "The president knows that Karl Rove wasn't involved." How does he know that?

A: Well, I've made it very clear that it was a ridiculous suggestion in the first place. ... I've said that it's not true. ... And I have spoken with Karl Rove.

Q: It doesn't take much for the president to ask a senior official working for him, to just lay the question out for a few people and end this controversy today.

A: Do you have specific information to bring to our attention? ... Are we supposed to chase down every anonymous report in the newspaper? We'd spend all our time doing that."

Q: When you talked to Mr. Rove, did you discuss, "Did you ever have this information?"

A: I've made it very clear, he was not involved, that there's no truth to the suggestion that he was.

A: I've made it very clear, he was not involved, that there's no truth to the suggestion that he was.

* __

Oct. 7, 2003

Q: You have said that you personally went to Scooter Libby (Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff), Karl Rove and Elliott Abrams (National Security Council official) to ask them if they were the leakers. Is that what happened? Why did you do that? And can you describe the conversations you had with them? What was the question you asked?

A: Unfortunately, in Washington, D.C., at a time like this there are a lot of rumors and innuendo. There are unsubstantiated accusations that are made. And that's exactly what happened in the case of these three individuals. They are good individuals. They are important members of our White House team. And that's why I spoke with them, so that I could come back to you and say that they were not involved. I had no doubt with that in the beginning, but I like to check my information to make sure it's accurate before I report back to you, and that's exactly what I did.

* __

Oct. 10, 2003

Q: Earlier this week you told us that neither Karl Rove, Elliot Abrams nor Lewis Libby disclosed any classified information with regard to the leak. I wondered if you could tell us more specifically whether any of them told any reporter that Valerie Plame worked for the CIA?

A: I spoke with those individuals, as I pointed out, and those individuals assured me they were not involved in this. And that's where it stands.

Q: So none of them told any reporter that Valerie Plame worked for the CIA?

A: They assured me that they were not involved in this.

Q: They were not involved in what?

A: The leaking of classified information.

* __

July 11, 2005:

Q: Do you want to retract your statement that Rove, Karl Rove, was not involved in the Valerie Plame expose?

A: I appreciate the question. This is an ongoing investigation at this point. The president directed the White House to cooperate fully with the investigation, and as part of cooperating fully with the investigation, that means we're not going to be commenting on it while it is ongoing.

Q: But Rove has apparently commented, through his lawyer, that he was definitely involved.

A: You're asking me to comment on an ongoing investigation.

Q: I'm saying, why did you stand there and say he was not involved?

A: Again, while there is an ongoing investigation, I'm not going to be commenting on it nor is ... .

Q: Any remorse?

A: Nor is the White House, because the president wanted us to cooperate fully with the investigation, and that's what we're doing.

so this particular bit of Justice will help me retain my emotional footing.

Yes, the full moon is in Taurus and Sunday is Mother's Day in the US and Karl Rove will be indicted.

285. So very very sorry for you. I know what you must be going thru.
I went thru that with both my parents, and too many aunts and uncles.

Unfortunately, everyone will have to go thru the death of their parents.

It's always too soon, no matter how and why and how old they are.

My heart goes out to you and your family in this time of great emotional sorrow.

Cryingshame. We lost our Mom in March '01. Not an easy thing to go through; however, with Pigboy and this regime on its' way to the Hague (HEY, one can wish, right?), hopefully, that will help you through your potential pain.

Consider my thoughts prayers if that's okay with you, or just good wishes if you prefer.

I met a man yesterday who was once given a 50-50 chance of even making it off the operating room table, let alone surviving longer than that. He's 92 now. Sometimes scary medical situations really do have wonderfully happy endings.

164. Stop it! As much as I agree with you, we have to stop the mindset
of "We are not worthy, we are not worthy..."

This is what the bushies have instilled in us. We are not the ungodly pagans they would like to paint us as being...we are the truth seekers who look to preserve the constitution that our forefathers passed on to us. There is nothing here to fear but fear itself.

100. Chris Matthews said something interesting on Imus this morning
They were talking about when he records his Sunday show and he was saying that they usually do it on Friday afternoon/night. But he said something very flippantly, "Of course if Karl Rove gets indicted today, we will go to General's Quarters and get the story done on Saturday". So Imus asked him "What do you mean?" And Chris did the backpeddle shuffle saying "that anything can happen on a Friday afternoon. But it appeared to me that he was expecting something to happen today.

So I don't think that you will be wrong Will.

while I was still in bed. I could have brained him, but then again he isn't the liberal wacko wild eyed crazy DUer that I am. But apparently, if the tweety is tossing out nuggets on Imus, he is doing so in order to lock in his juicy tidbit. If he's wrong, it dissipates in the ozone. If he's right, he (and MSNBC) can claim a breaking news story.

121. umm..this WH says 'if and when"

.... Sources close to the case said there is a strong chance Rove will also face an additional charge of obstruction of justice, adding that Fitzgerald has been working meticulously over the past few months to build an obstruction case against Rove because it "carries more weight" in a jury trial and is considered a more serious crime.

Some White House staffers said it's the uncertainty of Rove's status in the leak case that has made it difficult for the administration's domestic policy agenda and the announcement of an indictment and Rove's subsequent resignation, while serious, would allow the administration to move forward on a wide range of issues.

"We need to start fresh and we can't do that with the uncertainty of Karl's case hanging over our heads," said one White House aide. "There's no doubt that it will be front page news if and when (an indictment) happens. But eventually it will become old news quickly. The key issue here is that the president or Mr. Bolten respond to the charges immediately, make a statement and then move on to other important policy issues and keep that as the main focus going forward."

Here's an excerpt from Nixon's resignation speech. And it's so sad to see just how evil this administration has been-

In the Middle East, 100 million people in the Arab countries, many of whom have considered us their enemy for nearly 20 years, now look on us as their friends. We must continue to build on that friendship so that peace can settle at last over the Middle East and so that the cradle of civilization will not become its grave.

271. What an appropriate quote! And from Nixon. I was on the phone when KO
was on earlier, and I believe that I heard John Dean say something like 'Nixon's illegal activities look like child's play when compared to this administration.' Not only is the Bush* cabal more evil than Nixon, they have completely subverted whatever good will was possible in the M.E. for years to come, I'm afraid. It's really sad.

143. Thanks, Will! When I heard that Bush had scheduled a speech on
"immigration" for Monday night, that's when I became certain that the Rove indictment was imminent. I was just going to post this gut-level guess at one of the "immigration" speech threads. But I couldn't find the thread...

And, boom...here you are!

Just a reminder to all: A Rove indictment for perjury likely means a Libby/Rove wall of obstruction (the "sand" in the umpire's eyes that Fitzgerald spoke of, in his Libby press conference) for the investigation into those most responsible--Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld. It may mean that Fitzgerald has been unable to crack that wall. So it's not necessarily great news--although the emotional satisfaction of it, and the positive political implications, can't be denied.

But we are not going to be "saved" by one or two prosecutions. We still have a tremendous load of work to do to save this democracy--one our chief tasks being retrieval of our right to vote from Bushite-controlled electronic voting corporations. If we don't restore election transparency, we are just going to continue to be dicked with, by the corporate news monopolies and their delusionary narratives, and by war/corporate Democrats, who are waiting in the wings with limp "reforms" in hand, to give us the illusion of change. We MUST reclaim this democracy ourselves, first of all by restoring our right to vote, the very mechanism of our sovereignty as a people.

If a Rove indictment gives us courage and impetus--and some positive political energy--that's GREAT! It certainly gives me a boost that we still have a justice system that CAN indict someone like Rove. And he has been a villain, for sure. But amidst the joy, know that our work has just begun.

147. But it will drive Rove further underground where the 2006 elections
are concerned. No one will admit to getting advice from him, even if they will be getting that advice. AND his MO is so recognizable, there will be no way that they won't be tainted with it just the same.

Best news I have heard all day!

168. Happy Days Are Here Again!
Music and Lyrics by J. Yellen and M. Ager

So long sad times
Go long bad times
We are rid of you at last

Howdy gay times
Cloudy gray times
You are now a thing of the past

Happy days are here again
The skies above are clear again
So let's sing a song of cheer again
Happy days are here again

Altogether shout it now
There's no one
Who can doubt it now
So let's tell the world about it now
Happy days are here again

Your cares and troubles are gone
There'll be no more from now on
From now on ...

Happy days are here again
The skies above are clear again
So, Let's sing a song of cheer again

Happy times
Happy nights
Happy days
Are here again!
____________

PS: Rot in HELL, kkkarl!

I have been depressed all week waiting for the announcement and never hearing it. Wednesday and Friday the GJ meet. I read and re-read exactly how it went down for Libby, and I had a feeling Fitz was going to keep an even tighter lid on this.

I have been praying for this -- I mean prayers that pass the ceiling and shoot to the heavens as my soul CRIED OUT to GOD to stop the madness of this diabolical man.

Please God, no more cruel jokes. Please.

"Well now baby used to stay out all night long
She made me cry, child, she done me wrong
Hurt my nose upon, baby, that's no lie
Tables are turnin, now it's her turn to cry

Cause I used to love her, but it's all over now
Yes and I used to love her, but it's all over now
Yes and I used to love her, but it's all over now"

224. What makes Clark different from Pederson and Kyl?
The Grassroot Democrats for Leonard Clark campaign website is up and running. Leonard Clark is running for the U.S. Senate and is competing against Jon Kyl and Jim Pederson. Clark's vision is progressive and he differentiates himself from Pederson as a Democrat by 1) admitting within his URL address and website that he is a liberal and proud of it. Unlike Pederson who is ashamed of being a Democrat, Clark openly admits that he is a PROUD Democrat. 2) Clark represents the average working class Arizonan. He is not wealthy, privledged, or out of touch with the working people in Arizona such is the case with both Pederson and Kyl who are wealthy and won't even talk to people outside of their campaigns. Please take a look at his site and give your opinions and comments. Thank you.

With all due respect to Mr. Leopold, this investigation cannot be predicted.
Now I know that Mr. Leopold has to say something at this point since he's put himself on the line for an indictment by now. But nothing is nothing until it's something.
Forget about this and any predicted outcome until something is announced.

but, we are a major blogger. Not everyone's sight is on everyone's radar. We happen to have a fellow employee of Truthout (the OP) so of course, he's going to be keeping up with what Jason is about.

333. I am convinced that Rove is going dow and I think....
That the MO for these guys is hide the bigger problem by creating a diversion ASAP. I think we actually saw this happen in the past week. One week ago on Friday we had the "Sudden" resignation of Porter Goss. THis week we had the series of events which included first of all the resignation of Foggo on Wednesday followed byt the raid by the FBI today. I believe that the powers that be (Negroponte) knew this series of events was coming down this week and was given a heads up by (Gonzalez?) that the events were about to occur and Negropnte knew that having the FBI raid the CIA and basically they would have had to Arrest Foggo , Gosses main main and the number three at CIA. Can you imaging the crises that would be ensuing at this moment if the events of today had occured without Goss being out of the picture earlier in the chain of events. Bush would have been in front of the cameras having to answer why his guy Goss was involved with a guy Foggo who is now under arrest etc etc etc. The White house was given a heads up about all of this and they took evasive action to blunt the real trauma that has befallen on this crowd. The events of next week will be the same. Idiot in Chief will go before the cameras on Monday making a broad sweeping plan about the borders and the safety of the country and 9/11 and blah blah blah...and what he is really doing is hoping to play is "PAY NO ATTENTION TO THAT MAN BEING INDICTED BY FITZ"........... It is going to be a very intersting week indeed.

394. This is all way too good to be true....
...I'm gonna wait to believe it until the mainstream press breaks it.

399. Way overdue, hope he talks, but who can say what these criminals
will do.

A lot of what was put out here years ago appears to have borne fruit-even though it was denied (still is), there needs to be thorough reform--if that's possible.

No one is above the law.

402. I'll believe that when...
I see it on CNN,MSNBC or even Faux News. I absolutely love the idea but until I actually see the story break and Rove submit his "resignation",I won't be holding my breath. Although I'm from Connecticut, I want a Missouri.:)

407. I recommended it because I want it to be true but having been prematurely
excited and then burnt so many times before -- and from the same source -- I am holding my breath a bit less with each time...

412. Suggestion to the more gullible DUers out there:
Don't celebrate "Fitzmas" unless and until it actually happens. Take all "Rove is about to be indicted/Fitz has new startling evidence!" reports with a gigantic GRAIN OF SALT. Otherwise, you might as well believe in the existence of the Easter Bunny (or Santa Claus, in this case).

423. Yes, notice that the sources for this story are the
people who would benefit the most from getting it wrong.

Just sayin'.

424. Rover, Bye-bye.
All Bush has to do is pardon Rove. Do you think he is stupid enough to do it? Of course he is. Do you think he cares what the public's reaction would be?
I don't think so.After all, he is the Supreme Ruler, he can do anything he wants. So, expect a pardon.

429. Dear Will Pitt,
Gawd bless you, Jason and Truth Out. There is not one doubt in my mind that you people are telling the exact truth! Common sense alone leads me to this conclusion. Stand proud, you will all be vindicated.
Talk about eating our own! This is happening as we speak but those in power are controlling the media as usual. Hang tough!
