Mid May and I'm turning the furnace back on tonight. My newly leafed
maples have leaves on the tips of their branches that are changing color. What the heck is going on here?

1. Where is 'here'? I'm in TX and turned the a/c off 2 days ago;
this next week is supposed to be great, lows in the 50s. VERY odd for Texas in May, but I'm loving not having to pay the a/c bill.

3. SE quandrant of Iowa....
This week has been cold and rainy. It feels like late October. Yesterday the high was 55, and there's no way it made it that high today. I don't care what the weatherman says. I have my winter jammies on and my woolly slipper and I'm still freezing.

8. Howdy, neighbor.
I don't think my feet will ever get warm again. I hope the tomatoes make it through. I've already had to replant one of my containers on the deck.

14. I turned mine off, in fact, I haven't used it much, so far. Nice break
on the a/c bill. I've decided that I will go as long as I can before turning it back on. I can take the heat and my husband who can't, doesn't get home until after nine, so I can get away with not turning on the a/c during the day.

18. I'm loving it as I dread the a/c bills coming up this summer.
Also, this cooler weather is probably cooling the gulf/ocean, which might help deter hurricanes, which I also worry about.

Sort of normal to have a wet cool spell mid to late May here in the Mid Atlantic....really one of the nicest springs I can remember in years. Not to take away from the global warming thing, just enjoying it.

we have had a respite from our usual heat. It was in the 50's last night, and about 70 today. Not record breaking, but rather cool for this time of year.

17. Well, C'mon Down Here To The Land Of Cruella!
It's PLENTY hot here! I tried so hard NOT to turn my air conditioner on, but gave in the first of this week!

Actually, I think I could have held out a little longer, but I live about a mile away from the Gulf and there was this AWFUL smell coming from there and I was nauseous all the time. We've had no rain in so long and I think it's dried up sea-weed because even the Gulf waters are low!

Can't even go outside to get a sun tan!!

21. NW Ohio, and I had ICE on my windshield this morning.
And by "morning" I mean it was still there when I got out of the house about noon.

I've had the furnace off since early April, though. Looking forward to that next gas bill!

35. I'm in Michigan...
Edited on Fri May-12-06 10:46 PM by susanna
...lots of folks planted tomatoes in mid-April because of unseasonably WARM weather; they're all dying. Since I'm the resident gardener at work, they're asking me why it's happening. I pointed out we have had about four frosts since then, and tomatoes don't like that.

Tonight is going to the low 40s; we turned our heater back on for the time being. I am chomping at the bit, though, with about ten varieties of vegetable seedlings hanging out under grow lights and ready for the garden. The old timers' wisdom here in Michigan is that Memorial Day is the day for planting sensitive annuals, and this year is proving them right. That said, my neighbor's sugar maple is turning colors on the leaf tips as well...and THAT is strange, but I have no idea what to make of it since it has been such an up-and-down spring.

Some notes: my normally "foolproof" spring crops (peas, spring onions, carrots, broccoli, lettuce, spinach, cauliflower) are not doing very well this year at all; very small and weak - not really achieving their size, and I am beginning to doubt a harvest before summer crops are due to be planted. The only exception seems to be kale. It's in its glory for some reason.

on edit: spring onions, not onions...doh
