*** Happy Mothers Day To All You DU Mothers...! ***

Vintage Art Nouveau-Influenced Mothers Day Card

We all know how hard your job and is and how much you contribute here. Thanks for all the TRUE family values.

In recognition, as well, to the mothers at the White House tonight and to Code Pink:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x2283014

Mother's Day in the U.S., as many here know, was conceived by social activist Julia Ward Howe as a way to unite women against war following the Civil War. She is the author of the Mother's Day Proclamation of 1870:

From the voice of a devastated Earth a voice goes up with
Our own. It says: "Disarm! Disarm!
The sword of murder is not the balance of justice."
Blood does not wipe our dishonor,
Nor violence indicate possession.
As men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil at the summons of war,
Let women now leave all that may be left of home
For a great and earnest day of counsel.
Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.
Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means
Whereby the great human family can live in peace...

Here is a Mothers Day gallery in your honor:

SALLY MANN "The New Mothers" 1989

FAITH RINGGOLD "Dancing at the Louvre" 1991

1. Being mother and wife are, actually, my favorite roles.
And I have many.

Thank you.

Happy Mother's Day to you (pssst... it's also my son's 7th birthday).

10. We'll be feeding the homeless
My hubby and I, for Mom's Day, will be feeding the homeless men and women in Central Park, Bakersfield, California. We're serving cheese enchiladas, buttered bread and chocolate chip cookies. We are part of a larger group called "Food Not Bombs", which chooses to serve veggie dishes. There should be several others there who will add rice, soup, salad and other yummy delights.

13. Do repukes like Mexican food?
Maybe enchiladas aren't "Murikun" enough for them, even if they will be out of work and homeless shortly.

8. Motion gladly seconded!!!!
If my Mom were just a few years younger and could see a computer screen(she's 77 and diabetic),
she'd be right here telling us young uns to give the pukes hell. I gave her an
honorary DU username-MadBamaMartha. She loves it!

Every time we talk(twice weekly), she asks what's happening in "that Democratic computer site".
If only her generation had had this wonerful technology-:sigh:

Happy Mothers Day to all DU Moms-and to a DU Mom a generation too late.

And I bid Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers and those who have taken on the role of a mother-- God bless you all. May I also say that my heart goes out to all of those who have lost their moms, days like this are usually a reminder of what you have lost and I hope good memories flood your mind and make it a good day for you.

19. Why, thank you, Hissy
We're having sort of a rolling Mother's Day weekend doing various things -- Friday my husband drove me amost a hundred miles to visit the Nomadic Museum, a mystical/meditative/animal-human themed exhibit that leaves for Italy on Sunday (the artist/photographer G. Colbert was featured in last month's Smithsonian magazine). Saturday was with family, celebrating my MIL's 93rd b'day. I hope to make it to Arlington West on Sunday (probably should go to bed soon, then!), where there will be speakers and a reading of the original Mother's Day Proclamation calling us to activism.

My grown kids are elsewhere, but I'm proud to say I raised two liberals.

Love the gallery you included -- especially love Faith Ringgold's quilt. Years ago I worked in an office next to UCSB's small art museum/gallery, and at one point they had an exhibit of many of her quilted art pieces. I went nuts for them and spent quite a few lunch hours reading the stories along their hems. What a great artist.

Have a nice day, yourself.

Hekate

I saw a bit on the Colbert exhibit on CNN or somewhere, so I know of what you speak.

Here's my sweetie, Ava, age 3. Her Mother's Day card (with her teacher's assistance) read: "My Mom is special because she helps me find my blanket".

You just never know what your child will end up doing
for a living, but at least you can make sure that you raise
a thoughtful, caring human being.

My only child was a ballerina until she realized that she
didn't have the killer instinct to walk all over her peers.

Now, she's a professional movie makeup artist, and she does this:
