Filing in CIA leak focuses on Cheney

Items compiled from Tribune news services
Published May 14, 2006

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In a new court filing, the prosecutor in the CIA leak case revealed that Vice President Dick Cheney made handwritten references to CIA officer Valerie Plame--albeit not by name--before her identity was publicly exposed.

In a filing late Friday, Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald said he intends to introduce, at the trial of Lewis Libby, a copy of Joseph Wilson's op-ed article in The New York Times "bearing handwritten notations by the vice president." The article was published on July 6, 2003, eight days before Plame's identity was exposed.

The notations "support the proposition that publication of the Wilson Op Ed acutely focused the attention of the vice president and the defendant--his chief of staff--on Mr. Wilson, on the assertions made in the article and on responding to those assertions."

Wilson is married to Plame.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. prosecutor in the CIA leak case has told a court he plans to use as evidence a newspaper article with notes that he says were hand-written by Vice President Dick Cheney referring to Valerie Plame shortly before she was exposed as a CIA operative.

The notes show Cheney and his former chief of staff, Lewis "Scooter" Libby, were "acutely focused" on the July 6, 2003, article written by Plame's husband, Bush administration critic and former U.S. ambassador Joseph Wilson, said Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald in the pre-trial filing made on Friday.
