The Pope and The Da Vinci Code (put your coffee down)
A friend sent me this. But I got no coffee warning...

This man (on the left, wearing a fabulous vintage chiffon-lined Dior gold lame' gown over a silk Vera Wang empire waist tulle cocktail dress, accessorized with a 3-foot beaded peaked House of Whoville hat, and the ruby slippers Judy Garland wore in the "Wizard of Oz") is worried that The Da Vinci Code might make the Roman Catholic Church look foolish.

:)

27. I understand that some of the groups organizing "pray-ins"
against "The Da Vinci Code" are conservative Catholics, either the schismatic anti-Vatican II types or their sympathizers who are still within the Church but are ultra-conservative--possibly Opus Dei types? I think you know who I'm talking about here! I've had the misfortune of running into some of these folks online, and they are every bit as whacked-out as the Protestant fundies in their own way.

I suspect it's the unsympathic portrayal of Opus Dei in Dan Brown's book that has their panties in such a twist...

I respectfully disagree. This pope was head of the inquisition (whatever they call it now). Wasn't he in charge of purging the liberation theologists (the best part of the church)? Sounds right-wing to me.

61. Currently, many of these anti_catholic types are holding their noses
and standing alongside Catholics in a joint effort to destroy our country and the rest of the globe.

I'm a liberal Catholic. There is a HUGE difference between progressive/liberal Christian and the christo-fascist zombie-brigade.

11. I'm reading the book right now. Based on the fact that it is....
...an acknowledged book of fiction, I don't quite understand why the Catholic Church is getting so irritated. IMHO, their childish behavior is making the Catholic Church look bad, not the book.

Maybe there's more truth to the book than the author admits. That's the only way I can really understand the current behavior of the Church toward the book. What are they afraid of?

Edited on Sun May-14-06 12:15 PM by alfredo
It is not something the Pope would like either.

His other books "Jitterbug Perfume" and "Skinny Legs and All" skewer religion too. "Jitterbug Perfume" is very instructive.

You will never look at the 12 Days of Christmas the same.

26. people believe things they read in fiction
and why not? Is the stuff about phi fiction?
Did you know that there was a flu epidemic in 1918 that killed more people than all of WWI?
Do you know where I learned that?
From the TV show "Joan of Arcadia". I am not even sure it is true, but I believe it now, because it sounds possible, but I have not bothered to verify it. Probably I have learned lots of things from the fiction I read, or at least have remembered things and now believe them.

28. I think the depiction of the Opus Dei cult
is more accurate than they would like.

They were plenty upset about the book, but the fact that "The Da Vinci Code" is coming out as a MOVIE is what has them in hysterics right now. They know good and well that most poorly-educated people don't read books, not even popular fiction. They are much more likely to see the movie than read the book.

I'm an ex-Catholic, love history, love intrigue, know a bit about the background.

I haven't read the book because it was such a bestseller... like I didn't read "Geisha" for about five years, either - and LOVED it when I finally read it.

Should I go out today and spend the rest of Sunday reading The DaVinci Code?
