1. Not sure what you are referring to

But, Im a former LDS missionary- still technically a member.

I worked as a domestic violence counselor in Utah and saw several times where a guy that was just about to go on a mission was let off the hook for rape because his bishop pleaded with the family of the woman not to press charges because then the boy would not go on a mission.

From my experience this is much more common in Utah and AR than other states - the laws might have changed though - I know in Utah it is now up to the police to press charges not the victim, at least in Domestic violence cases - not to sure how a rape of a minor would be considered because they are not domestically living together (at least under the law).

Please note it is the local leadership (think catholic priest and arch bishop) not the LDS church per say that has done this. Its not supposed to happen per the church rules. There are always problems when any group has absolute power and that is what happens in UT and AR in small communities.

2. I'm talking about the case of the young man in Arizona
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x1184411

From the OP

http://www.azdailysun.com/articles/2006/05/13/news/stat...

A judge on Friday sentenced the son of Arizona Senate President Ken Bennett to 30 days in jail and his fellow counselor to 45 days for a series of hazings at a youth camp near Prescott last June.

Clifton Bennett, 18, and fellow counselor Kyle Wheeler, 19, admitted to abusing 18 boys ages 11 to 14 -- who had been hand-picked for a weeklong leadership camp -- by poking them in the rear end with broomsticks, a flashlight and a cane as a punishment or just because they were in a bad mood.
The boys wore underwear or swim trucks at the time of the "broomings," records show.

****

Bennett is supposed to go on an LDS mission this fall (see post #1 and earlier DU threads about this case).

4. Evidently there is a rule about felons going on these missions
but not misdemeanors. The charge in this case is being treated as a misdemeanor so the kid evidently is good to go. It also will help make him judgement proof for at least two years as missionaries are pretty much impoverished so it makes a civil suit much harder.

6. I can't understand why the LDS church would want missionaries
like this. All it takes is one person identifying themselves as Mormon doing something wrong or stupid to another to make those other people think the church condones it. I know for a fact that there are Mormons who go on genealogical websites and glean information from posted family trees which they use to baptize those people. It happened to me-they even went so far as to baptize my very much living mother, who hit the roof in anger. Of course the offending poster never answered emails, and the LDS church denied any responsibility-but it left a bad taste not only in my mouth but in the genealogical community in general.

8. The church will release him
It won't be announced in the press but they will dump this kid and send him to "counseling". The church will not keep news-making freaks in the field. I know.
