Ok, let me get this straight.
We're deploying 6,000 NG for 3,000 miles of border (2 NG per mile if I do my math correctly). They can't arrest, they can't detain, they may not even patrol the border but be used in support for the border guards. doing what gassing up the blazers? loading guns? going for coffee? this little farce to try to win approval points is so transparent it's embarrassing.

1. And, I don't think they'll be carrying weapons, at least not loaded ones.

14. That will last 1 week tops.
And then it'll be HMMWVs with .50 cals and M16A4s 6 mags full, plus 9mm backups (or maybe Mossberg's shotguns) and then...

Of course, in 1 year Americans will be desensitized to seeing Troops patrolling America with loaded weapons.
Are there still troops at Airports? (shows how much I've flown commercial in the last 5 years).

2. They'll catch as many mexicans as bush caught terrorists in Iraq I figure.
I figure approximately ZERO.

3. I suppose they could
shout "welcome to america!" as the mexicans cross the border a half mile down the road from them.

4. Hey...
Someone's gotta go pick up sandwiches for the "my-newt" men.

To be serious: I wouldn't object to having them there if four criterion were met:
1. They had a real mission.
2. I thought this would work -- I mean one guy for every 500 yards is ridiculous.
3. That they were equipped for the job and not just another scheme to make Halliburton money.
4. That in addition to patrolling for illegals, they were disarming the 'my-newt' men and sending
them the f**k back to whatever dirt hole they crawled out of.

issuing fines and inspecting for undocumented workers.

11. It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling
thinking of two of our soldiers shaking down a CEO. We should even let them carry weapons. Torture would be fine for making them give over employee records or just shoot them if they resist. My sincere apologies to any non-evil CEOs on the board. Just venting.

7. this is what president of border patrol union said on DRehm's show
today (he spoke by phone; I can't find his name)

he said the entire speech was bogus.....explicitly said national guard would not help, no matter how many were there, b/c they could only observe, not arrest

he also said many illegals in the interior cannot be held b/c there is no place to hold them.....therefore they are just let go into the general population

is this info correct? I know little about how the border patrol works

8. Burying land mines I hope
You don't need to arrest or detain to bury land mines...

12. Yeah, I don't think landmines are a great idea
They tend to be real bad for families that step on them. Secure the borders not turn it into a killing field.

18. Oh Please,

The wall the Israeli's are building is pathetic and weak.
Come to the DMZ in Korea and see a real barrier. Huge walls, metal gates, landmines, heavily armed patrols, military bases on both sides, armored units, air power, underground motion sensors, the works. Even a giant statue of the lunatic Kim that you can see from the top of one of the observatories.
This is the kind of wall we should be striving for. One that keeps people in...er...out. Well, shill o'lielly thinks it keeps people out of north korea. But, since nobody wants to go there, it's really to keep people in.
The Israeli Wall is built by pikers.

edited for spelling

21. Good idea...
I'm sure there are best practices from the DMZ that can be applied to the southern border. Thanks for pointing this out.

10. It is delicious in it's ineptitude.
No one likes this. It is a disaster.

I so love it. We should rejoice.

I wonder, was Rove involved?

13. Bush** cut 9790 border patrol agents last year
...despite the National Intelligence Reform Act requiring him to add 10,000 agents between 2006-2011.

WHY?

Is it possible that the border states will be made responsible for paying the NG salaries? Or was this just another case of Bush**'s maladministration of the country and disinterest in our security?

he has rethought his position based on solid evidence and details.
He didn't flip-flop, nor did he screw up. Even though that's what it looks like. Don't believe the facts. Facts are liberal.

jr is a nitwit, they will discuss it for a week or so and then it will be on to something else.
