Protesters Arrested As They Attempt To Enter Halliburton Meeting
Protesters Arrested As They Attempt To Enter Halliburton Meeting
Wednesday May 17, 2006 11:27am

Duncan (AP) - As Halliburton shareholders meet inside a rural Oklahoma building, protesters outside are being rounded up by police.

Sixteen people protesting the company's environmental record and military contracting role were arrested on trespassing charges this morning while surging toward the shareholders' meeting.

Police say they had warned the protesters not to leave their designated area.

The meeting is being held in Duncan, about 80 miles south of Oklahoma City. Houston-based Halliburton was founded there and is the town's leading employer. Critics say the meeting was there in an attempt to avoid protests.

1. So now Halliburton has a 'Free Speech Zone'?
'Police say they had warned the protesters not to leave their designated area.'

When will that mean 'stay in your houses'?

2. Was that private property?
Or was it public property they were arrested on?

7. with all the government money Halliburton sucks up
I'd be in favor of declaring this meeting place "public property"

We paid for it

And Halliburton has more influence on government policy now than all the Democrats in congress put together

4. Interesting how the GOP always likes authoritarian fascists organizations
like corporation, military, and orthodox religion. Hope this makes the news.

5. Doesn't anyone have Halliburton stock to donate to the protesters...
so they can enter the meeting legally?

11. How can they not allow you as a shareholder to attend meetings?
You need to write an article about that at the least and write your representatives if they are deliberately keeping you from attending meetings. That's huge.

13. I had an infamous confrontation with John Warner on the Qua Viet
River in 1972.

And then had a glorious reintroduction to him at a Halliburton Shareholder's Dinner a few years ago.

My family still attends (my evil stepfather retired as Pres of KBR International not all that long ago). We have been involved with Brown&Root since its inception.

Screw 'em, I don't want to attend those bs meetings, anyway.

Dinners like that are fun arent they?

Sounds like you are a lone ranger in la familia. I know the feeling.

I come from a family of Republicans as well. Brother is a Bush appointee.

Makes it very challenging at times to say the least.

10. I wish I knew about this earlier.

I received an invite in the snail mail because I own a few shares in a mutual fund. I would have been glad to send it to someone who could have put it to good use.

And BTW ..... I voted No on every one of the directors.

12. Boy, 16 people "surged" toward the meeting
Makes you wonder what might have happened if Halliburton was faced with a real mob of angry people if the presence of 16 persons puts them in such a tizzy.

I'll bet the fatcat shareholders are real happy to be meeting in Duncan OK (just three miles from beautiful downtown East Bumblefuck) rather than in Houston.
