News Break--Satire is Dead!!!!!
If Jonathan Swift were alive today and wrote "A Modest Proposal" for the New York Times, progressives across the country would label him inappropriate, uncouth, over the line, amongst other things.

{In case you have never been exposed to Swift's fabulous satire, http://art-bin.com/art/omodest.html}

2. did you miss Colbert?
Reports of the death of satire have been greatly exaggerated (apologies to another satirist, Mark Twain)

6. He has given me some
hope that satire is still alive. Though there were a lot of finger waggers after his bit. Some things today bring down that hope, though.

4. If someone makes a bad pun, and no one laughs, does it mean punnery
is dead?

some satirists need to either get better at it, or develop thicker skins.

7. If someone writes a limerick on the bathroom wall
and the janitor paints over the limerick, does that mean that the writer even had a chance?

10. It Just Means That Someone Didn't Get The Joke...
... or didn't appreciate the humor. It's not really an indication of whether or not the satirist needs "thicker skin". (Why would the satirist need thicker skin? That makes no sense to me.) If anything, the stern-faced sour-pusses need to get their heads out of their ass and look around... take in the scenery, observe the facts, smile, lighten-up.

And what's all this "and no one laughs" nonsense anyway? I thought it was brilliant, as did many others.

19. all satire is uniformly brillliant simply because its satire?
or if someone doesn't like some satire, that means the fault is in the audience?

wow. let me sit at your feet. From your lips tumbles pearls of wisdom.

so, that means yakov smirnov and pauli shore are equal to all other comedians, just because they're comedians?

wow. amazing.

25. Oh Good Grief...
<< all satire is uniformly brillliant simply because its satire? >>

How do you figure that? To repeat: what I said before was "it just means that someone didn't get the joke... or that they didn't appreciate the humor". Where's the flaw in that statement?

What about that suggests to you my belief that "all satire is uniformly brilliant"??

<< or if someone doesn't like some satire, that means the fault is in the audience? >>

Well, yes, in a way. I'm not certain that "fault" is the correct word... but if they don't get or appreciate the humor, if it's not their cup-o-tea, that's not the fault of the satirist, is it?

<< wow. let me sit at your feet. From your lips tumbles pearls of wisdom. >>

My farts smell like roses too. (Breathe deep! Nice, huh?)

<< so, that means yakov smirnov and pauli shore are equal to all other comedians, just because they're comedians? >>

You forgot Carrot Top. (But... who said anything about comedians being "equal"? I just don't understand where all this is coming from.)

<< wow. amazing. >>

I know. Impressive, isn't it? Want to touch me?

9. And "other"
people would be seriously telling him it is a great idea. Some of those people are on radio, TV, and in the newspapers. Swift had his own problems of people "getting it". Nor did it have much effect then on the Irish Question. Satire is not dead. When satirists are being killed (Nero's pal Petronius Arbiter- watch out Colbert!) that is news.

20. It must be, because I don't get the broken link/satire connection
on another note - I saw a thread titled:

Gerald Ford is dead.

That was a sad moment for me. I did not like him as a leader, but he was an historic figure. There was a moment of mortality and loss. To open the thread to find it a lame attention-getting device for his/her rant was very distasteful to me, personally.

I did not read the rest of the post because of the stupid stunt used to lure me there. Sorry I'm not cool enough to get it.

26. Sorry about the link
Here it is for real
http://art-bin.com/art/omodest.html
It was just the "}" that got tacked on the end that was the problem.

If you had read the rest of the post, you would have understood that it was satire and was making a pretty valid point about some pretty timely things.
