"She's not a Christian."
This memory was prompted by the other t-shirt thread.

A few weeks ago I was standing near the deli counter at the Wal-Mart (I know... I know...) I was wearing my favorite pair of capris and one of my favorite t-shirts:

(available from Northern Sun)

There was a man with three young girls I assumed to be his daughters. They were roughly 12, 8 and 4 years old. The oldest girl was really staring at me and it kinda freaked me out until I realized she was reading my shirt.

I walked to the left to get in line and she said with a big smile, "Dad, did you read her shirt?"

The man turned and quickly read my shirt, then turned to the oldest girl with only one phrase: "She's not a Christian."

10. Unfortunately, I didn't respond at all
After the fact, I thought of lots of things I wish I would have said... which is usually the case.

I think it shocked me because it happened in Iowa. In Oklahoma I would have expected it, but not here.

Edited on Thu May-18-06 02:44 PM by lavenderdiva
who wasn't a well-behaved woman, didn't play by the rules of her day, and became Queen, and eventually saved the Jews. How's that for a start?

BTW, I LOVE your shirt! (and I'm a Christian)

ps. there's always also the story of Mary, mother of Jesus, who wasn't 'well-behaved' by the standards of her day (getting pregnant outside of marriage), and she made quite a bit of history...

50. Yes, it is different in Iowa
I was born and raised in Oklahoma. I lived there until the mid-1990s and continue to travel back 2-3 times each year (to visit family).

Religion in Oklahoma is much more 'in your face' than it is here in Iowa. For instance, it is rare to hear any proclaim "Praise Jesus!" in a public setting here. When I travel to Oklahoma, I hear it quite often (at least daily, often several times a day).

To my knowledge there are no true megachurches in Iowa. To my knowledge evangelical and fundamentalists Christians are not the majority here.

18. And he could tell that by your shirt?
Here is what he taught his children: It is alright to judge someone as not being Christian by their shirt. I am a Christian and I have a DU bumper sticker and an Impeach Bush bumper sticker on the back of my black Dodge Magnum! It gets noticed a lot and I love it. I have had a big Impeach Bush sign on my front lawn ever since the 2,000th soldier was killed in Iraq and I will not take it down until they come home. I even decorated it for the Christmas holidays! I take my two daughters (ages 24 and 13) to anti war protests. We go to church every Sunday. We are pro choice and pro gay marriage. I guess we are just weird. During the 2004 elections I wore my Kerry button on my sweater into the school my daughter attends which is at my church. We are very political and hate GWB with a passion. Jesus was definitely a liberal. Don't let that idiot make you think all Christians are nut jobs! And, by the way, I absolutely love your shirt! He just did not get it. There are some men who think women who try to have a voice and power are the next best thing to Satan. They are very afraid of women like us. And they should be.

They live in their own tiny, insulated, terrified box, listening to their echo-chamber preachers, chanting slogans at each other with their Gospel tunes cranked up as loud as they can to drown out the voice of reason.

Yes I'm having a bad day.

19. The woman that Laural Ulrich wrote about WAS a Christian.
That's the funny part.

I decided to look Laurel up - the person your shirt quoted

An interview came up of her about her writing "A Midwives Tale" - about Martha Ballard.

She wrote:

"And I would go day by day for every other year of the diary, and I would tick off what was in each entry: baking or brewing, spinning or washing, or trading, sewing, mending, deliveries, general medical accounts, going to church, visitors, people coming for meals, etc."

http://www.dohistory.org/book/100_interview.html

---

Laurel Thatcher Ulrich is Phillips Professor of Early American History at Harvard University. Formerly a professor of American history at the University of New Hampshire, she is the author of Good Wives (1982) and numerous articles and essays on early American history. She won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1991 for A Midwife’s Tale: The Life of Martha Ballard Based on Her Diary, 1785--1812. Born and raised in the Rocky Mountain West, she has lived in New England since 1960. During her tenure as a MacArthur Fellow, she assisted in the production of a PBS documentary based on A Midwife’s Tale. Her work is also featured on an award-winning Web site called dohistory.org. She and her husband, Gael Ulrich, are the parents of five grown children.

27. You've planted a seed in that girl's mind
Sure her dad dismissed the shirt in his simplistic way, and certainly his daughter will follow his lead right now. But she'll remember your shirt, and hopefully, someday she'll think more about it and what it means. It may lead her to start questioning the beliefs forced on her by her parents. And maybe - perhaps not likely, but maybe - it may be the catalyst that opens her mind and changes her life.

So keep wearing it, because it is in such simple expressions that our power lies.

I love Laurel Thatcher Ulrich's work; her book The Age of Homespun is one of my favorites and I use it sometimes in my classes. It's sitting behind me on my office bookshelf now as I write this.

28. lol- I saw a very burly man who stood about 6'5" the other day,
shaved head, tattoos- the whole bit. Just about the most intimidating human I've seen in years, and he had a t-shirt that said "Teach Your Children to Worship Satan". There were two very uptight looking women standing behind him, both staring at the statement, but they didn't say a thing until he left.

I laughed my ass off- but I asked him outside what was the deal with the shirt. He just said he liked to wear it because it pisses people off. I thought that was just hillarious.

Anyway- sorry- your story just made me think of that. Good on you- and fuck that idiot who thinks he owns Christianity.
