While don't entirely like *'s proposals, especially when it comes to a useless and symbolic sending of guard troops, I do agree w/ the general thrust in terms of offering a path for current (and prospective future) illegals to gain some sort of legitimacy in there status.

Let's face it, there's simply no way to keep out everyone who wants to enter, never mind trying to oust all who are already here. Most people will do the right thing is given a chance. If someone wants to work in our vegetable fields or any other bottom-rung paying job, they ought to be given a simple and clear way to do so legally.

They should be a simple and clear way to do this, hey i believe there is it's called citizenship. But if all those veggie pickers were legal citizens then they probably wouldn't work in those fields for five dollars an hour "if they get that much".

The very simple solution to this very real problem is to make the jobs go away, and enforce the laws that are already on the books. But this admin and the democratic party, have no plans to disrupt the flow of cheap illegal workers.

It's smoke and mirrors again folks, and we're all involved in how can we help the poor folks from Mexico. Well they could help them if thats really what they want to do, by paying them a living wage.

It's a race to the bottom, and if you're an american without a college degree or trade that can demand a high paying position then you're competing with a third world country for employment.

And that doesn't make for a very bright future, for illegal immigrants or citizen.

Your points are well taken. In regards to the race to bottom, I think that's the return to the old days of serfdom that all true conservatives dream of.

Taken as a whole both cheap illegal labor, along with industrial migration to the 3rd world labor markets, and even white-collar out-sourcing all represent a situation most favorable to capital and management.

Call me liberal dreamer, but I think we have to take an "we're all in this boat together" approach. We cannot enforce or fenc-build our way out of this problem. I take the radical position that the vast majority of people who come to this country do so because they believe in our ideals. For most of us they're like our forebearers, and we're stronger because of them.

The idea that imagrants take away from the pie we have is simply wrong. In some cases, certainly. But on the whole, they make the pie bigger.
