Eyman, churches link up
OLYMPIA -- Using a page torn from the Karl Rove playbook, initiative salesman Tim Eyman has turned to a network of evangelical churches to help repeal the gay-rights law that the Legislature passed this spring.

<snip>

Though early reports indicated a lackluster response to the measure, Eyman is banking on an eleventh-hour surge from as many as 5,400 churches he hopes will participate in "Referendum Sunday."

<snip>

Eyman's tactics appear to mirror those of Rove, President Bush's political strategist whom many experts credit with mobilizing conservative and evangelical voters in the 2004 election.

Anne Levinson, campaign chairwoman for Washington Won't Discriminate, said Eyman and several conservative churches have been collecting signatures at gun shows and other hot spots for anti-gay sentiment.
