Condos offer car fans 4 walls for 4 wheels

Or more, depending on buyer's whims

By Dee-Ann Durbin
ASSOCIATED PRESS

May 20, 2006

David deMartino just bought a 760-square-foot, one-bathroom condo for $212,900 in the booming market of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He's already ordered custom flooring and cabinets and a flat-screen TV, but he has no plans to move in.

That's because the condo is for his collection of cars and motorcycles.

The idea of buying a parking space is nothing new in crowded urban areas. A 180-square-foot space at the Brimmer Street Garage in Boston's exclusive Beacon Hill neighborhood just sold for $200,000, according to a garage manager.

But a parking space may be exposed to the elements or next to a rowdy family's hulking sport utility vehicle. That's why some enthusiasts with money to burn are turning to car condos, where their vehicles will be stored in individual, weatherproof, air-conditioned garages with 24-hour security and concierge services.

3. So's toaster streudel, but people have different priorities.
If you have the money and want to safely garage your $100k+ car, what's the problem with this?

4. More an aye yi yi issue
than a "problem". Folks are free to burn through their money as they choose - and we are free too comment (free speech and all of that) per what it suggests about them. Not just a parking garage - but a full flat screen tv and other amenities. Far surpassing the Jones's in excess - in your example owning $100,000 cars and securing parking spaces more luxurious than many folks' homes - while the are Martins (generic family or community) barely survive in great poverty about three miles away - if one is not doing anything about the issues of poverty that impact those in poverty and the whole community ... suggests something about the individual. To some maybe it suggests that the individual "has made it" (wooHoo!), to others it suggests that the individual has messed up priorities...

Are you suggesting that there should be no free speech to comment, unless it is positively, on the phenemon (ala inverse political correctness?)

5. Of course not, I was just questioning the statement.
Realize too, that we don't know any other facts surrounding this issue. Perhaps the person in this story also contributes freely to charities.

So many people tend to view wealthy people spending money as vulgar. I'm just wondering why.
