WAKE UP DU! THIS is the face of your enemy. Don't let it slink away ...
Edited on Sun May-21-06 11:20 AM by Harper_is_Bush
On May 19th The National Post - owned by CanWest Global - printed an exclusive front page story about a new Iranian law requiring Jews to wear yellow arm bands.
The story was accompanied by a large picture of some 1940 era Jews with the Nazi insignia on their coats.

As most of you know, the story was false.

The sources were Iranian ex-pats and the only confirmation attempted was with a Jewish human rights group.

THE MOST BASIC OF CHECKING WAS NOT DONE!!

The story caused an international furor. Other news organizations picked it up. Rightwing warmongers began frothing. International leadership, including Canada, Austrailia, and the USA, bashed Iran and likened them to Nazis.

Who is this National Post and why should you care???

They are the flagship paper of a huge media conglomerate that is getting larger. Go here for a full list of their ownings: http://www.cjr.org/tools/owners/canwest.asp

They are your enemy. I do not subscribe to media conspiracies, but in the case of this corporation the ownership is openly pro-Israel and neo-conservative. Investigate...look at the ownership and associations. Read the wikipedia entry for The National Post: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Post
it is chilling.

CanWest global - with ownership that openly admits it controls editorial content (and who knows what other content) actually writes news items.

They are expanding into the USA, so allow this henious example of irresponsible and sensationalist media behaviour to slip by without punishment at your peril.

Your choice.

7. In this case it is correct. Read this from Wikipedia on Asper family:
"CanWest Global and the Post are now managed by Asper's sons, Leonard and David. The Aspers openly admit that they control the editorial content of the paper. One of the family's most notorious positions is its longstanding view that the CBC(Canada's public broadcaster) should be dismantled because of its supposed anti-Israel reportage."

While I agree with you about certain radical jewish elements in the media, I think we need to be measured and not over-extend the concern to all media. To do so is to only play into the hands of those who would paint any criticism as anti-semetic.

see the OP. There is a link to a list of what they own and a Wikipedia item on The National Post which contains details about CanWest and this family.

I would extend the concern to all media they own, and I think that's reasonable given what they're on record saying.

17. You're welcome. It is hugely important...
and I think the most important part of it now is how it's being allowed to silently pass by.

The CBC is afraid to touch it. I see nothing on CTV. Nothing in SunMedia today.

How a major national daily can post a false claim about Iran passing a law for Jews to wear yellow armbands on the FRONT PAGE with a huge picture of some circa WW2 Jews with a Nazi insignia...how they can do that and not become the story like CBS and Dan Rather did is mind-boggling.

No retraction. No apology. Hardly a peep about it anywhere.

Meanwhile half the world probably still believes that Iran is tagging Jews. It's criminal.

This item is from before they owned the National Post, but there is no reason to think their policies have changed: The CanWest Chill: "We do not run in our newspaper Op Ed pieces that express criticism of Israel". 21. If you didn't hear the story then you must have taken the weekend off.
It was picked up by many news organizations around the world. It was also commented on by several world leaders, including the Canadian PM, the Austrailian PM, and the state department. All likened Iran to Nazis over the report.
All of the typical rightwing frothers (Drudge, Powerline, Little Green idiots) have picked it up and won't put it down. Anti-Iran forces in Israel are making a very big deal out of it and Iran is understandably quite upset over the accusation.

CanWest Global owns the National Post...it's the "flagship" daily newsprint of the company. The company is huge, and is getting bigger. Educate yourself, check the OP for the Wikipedia link. Read the link in post 19.

It's now noted on MSNBC with a word about its falsity and the Canadian newspaper "backing off" from its initial report:

Iran pushes Islamic dress code for women
Fears rise that Tehran will restore mandatory head coverings, overcoats

The Associated Press
Updated: 6:52 p.m. PT May 20, 2006

TEHRAN, Iran - A draft law aimed at encouraging Islamic dress raised fears Saturday that Iran’s hard-line government plans to re-impose veils and head-to-toe overcoats on women who have shirked the restrictions for years, letting hair show and wearing jeans and shapely outfits...

~snip~

Preparing for cultural battle

On Friday, a Canadian newspaper, The National Post, quoting Iranian exiles, said the law would force Jews, Christians and other religious minorities to wear special patches of colored cloth to distinguish them from Muslims. The report drew a condemnation from the United States, which said such a law would carry “clear echoes of Germany under Hitler.”

A copy of the draft law obtained by The Associated Press made no mention of religious minorities or any requirement of special attire for them, and the Post later posted an article on its Web site backing off the report.

they ended up printing more information the next day about "experts" and the Jewish Iranian parliament member calling it false, but they never actually said it was an incorrect story.

The fucking title of this backing off was "Iranian embassy denies dress code". That's pathetic.
It should have been "We were wrong about the Iran law for Jews".
Although the story did contain most of the new information on who was saying what by the next day, they never retracted and from the title it's obvious they are less than contrite.

Badging Infidels in Iran
By Andrew G. Bostom
AmericanThinker.com | May 23, 2006

The Iranian Majlis or Parliament has reportedly passed (now disputed) a law requiring that, “Jews would have to sew a yellow strip of cloth on the front of their clothes, while Christians would wear red badges and Zoroastrians would be forced to wear blue cloth.” An outraged Rabbi Marvin Hier of the Simon Weisenthal Institute immediately responded to the provisions for Jews:

“This is reminiscent of the Holocaust…Iran is moving closer and closer to the ideology of the Nazis.”

Such a comparison sprang to the minds of many.

42. "Canada Free Press" rightwing rag makes hay with the story
Iranian dress code — might have done some good
By Arthur Weinreb, Associate Editor,
Monday, May 22, 2006

Last Friday, Canada’s National Post broke a story that the government of Iran had passed a law that would require its non-Muslim citizens to wear a strip of cloth on their clothing that would denote their religion. According to the report by Amir Taheri, Jews would be required to wear yellow, Christians, red and Zoroastrians blue.

Denials from Iran came fast and furious. The Iranian authorities indicated that there were proposed laws that would require proper dress for women and standard Islamic dress for men that would remove any class and ethnic distinctions, but vehemently denied that distinguishing colours would be required for non-Muslims.
snip
If the world could see pictures of Iran’s minorities walking the streets of Tehran wearing strips of cloth of various colours then maybe, just maybe, those who think that "Hitler" is simply an adjective to insult those on the right with, there might actually be a better appreciation of the horrors and dangers of the Nazi Germany regime. And there might be a better understanding of the present dangers that the civilized world faces from Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his government.

I'm not linking to that trash. If you want to read the rest you can google a piece of the above.
