ABC Reporter: Bush 'Makes Me Feel As If We Are Drug Dealers or Terrorists'

ABC’s Ross: Surveillance of Journalists ‘Makes Me Feel…As If We Are Drug Dealers or Terrorists’

This morning on CNN’s Reliable Sources, ABC’s chief investigative correspondent Brian Ross — who this week learned he was the target of federal surveillance operations — described the effect that unchecked spying is having on journalists:

ROSS: it makes me feel, in a way — and this is, I think, the disturbing part — as if we are drug dealers or terrorists trying to traffic in information, and should we be using bags full of quarters like old Mafia capos to avoid having our phone calls traced? I don’t think I’m doing anything wrong; I don’t think any other reporter is, either. We’re trying to cover these stories, which are difficult, but which are very important.

Ross also revealed that the surveillance has had a chilling effect on his sources, who now risk being exposed:

I’m working on a big story now with people who are confidential sources inside the Federal Air Marshal Service. They were all alarmed that they might be exposed as talking with me in violation of rules. So it’s of great concern.

2. freedom of speech & freedom of the press guarantee freedom
I remember growing up doing the Cold War, 1 of the things that they emphasized as loss of
democracy was a loss of these rights.

16. I'm remember being very chilled last year...
When I read a story on DU about a survey of teens and a HUGE number of them (I think over 50%) thought it was okay for the government to approve stories before they were aired or printed.

22. well, I saw ABC This Week
and I defintely think that George had fire in his eyes when he interviewed AG Gonzales
about the journalist being investigated for criminal charges regarding classified information,
I really don't see what the crime is when it's about reporting on an illegal activity.

But I was not worried because I was not a head.
Then they came after the homosexuals
But I was not worried because I was not a homosexual.
Then they came after the journalists
But I was not..... WTF!

6. Then Brian, you start rallying that simpering clan of "reporters"
you call colleagues and begin the process of doing your job and fighting back. You dig, develop "Deep Throat" sources, tell the truth, and reveal the corruption of this administration! The media needs to take its collective power and get to work!

8. If the media had not been complicit right from the start, they would not
be in this situation now.
I cannot feel any more sympathy for the reporters than I feel for the rest of the American citizens who have been subject to this for over 5 years already.
NOW the media finally understand how it feels!!!

9. This is what happens when you let the private world into government
for too many generations. It's a reverse coup. They came in through the backdoor and destroyed out constitution.

10. Maybe the media will stand up and defend themselves now...
Naaa, why bother.

Probably better to just whine about it a little and hope a wealthy white person gets abducted soon for a chance to do some real "hard-hitting" journalism.

11. The news media needs to go on the offensive. Hell, they already
know the Bushies attitude toward a free Press. Put the Government people responsible for this that lawsuits will be filed if freedom of the Press is impinged.

14. Seems to me that the harder the government makes it for reporters
to get information, the more important it is for the reporters to do just that.

But, I bet if you studied numbers over the last 5 1/2 years since DU was founded, more people from DU have been audited by the IRS than among the population in general. Just a wild guess on my part.

18. solidarity could preserve their independence
If members of the press would only realize that their salvation and their independence rests in their solidarity against intimidation!!

They'd better start pushing back right now. Right now!

And we need to give them cover by demanding they stand up. Renew all efforts to contact members of their professional organizations and demand they push back. Society of Professional Journalists. National Press Club. White House Correspondents Association. Editor & Publisher Magazine. Yada yada yada.

PUSH BACK! GET MAD!

23. I don't think they could care much less....they know where their
bread comes from, and on which side the butter lies

the ones that stand up, like Bob Parry, lose their jobs, and are gulagged to the web, never to be heard from again in the mainstream

19. drip, drip, drip, BushCo will not be able to stop all leaks, all reporters
& all Congresspeople like Conyers, Hinchey & Feingold dedicated to getting the truth. The BushCo admin is going down and stopping some leaks and reporters here and there will not prevent the house of cards from falling down. The pRes can save some of his funny one-liners for talent night at the jailhouse.

24. Makes you wonder what *hasn't* been leaked, doesn't it?
So many criminal actions have already leaked, but they're not focussed on defusing those- they're focussed on halting future leaks. Makes me wonder what they're so worried about.

27. On 10-11-2001 all Americans became suspect,
one day after the US was attacked by 19 Arab terrorists.

Makes perfect sense in a neocon world.
