Bush's Wicked Iraq Lies
Edited on Sun May-21-06 02:02 PM by bigtree
You told a lie, an odious, damned lie;
Upon my soul, a lie, a wicked lie.
-- Othello

President Bush and his regime have waged their war against Iraq with lies and deceptions. All the way through his invasion and the occupation of the sovereign nation, the American people, the Iraqis, and the world have allowed this counterfeit loser to convince us to disbelieve our lying eyes and accept his piling on as progress.

The theft of Iraq's oil and resources was certainly the ultimate aim of the Bush family's bloody interventions into Iraq, but, the sorry state they're defending now is a veneer of shifting excuses tailored to explain away the catastrophic events their militarism triggered. Their actions demonstrate that the present American regime lacks the will or ability to control the continuing violence there, or to repair the divisions which surfaced with Bush's swaggering removal of Saddam's controlling authority.

All that is left for those of us in opposition is to either remove Bush from power; dilute his ability to wage war by changing the make-up of the legislature with the hope they will restrain him; or lope along behind him as he gallivants across the globe with our military, directing them to hew more bloody, oppressive roads to nowhere.

The Iraqi authority that our military enabled to achieve power in Iraq is slowly consolidating power in their continuation of their aping of democracy which began with the interim installation of the first false authority under Chalabi; the purchased, ambitious exile who supplied most of the bogus evidence the Bush regime used to justify the war. The most pressing ambition of the junta - outside of shedding the restrictive armor of their enabling U.S. benefactors - is the control of the revenue that would flow from the oil wells, and the means to carve out their own sect's parcel of Iraq independent from the U.S. backed central authority that they now opportunistically want to grace their efforts with its contrived legitimacy.

After the new authority swore itself in yesterday, Bush called them to congratulate them on their "new day" and the "new chapter" for Iraq. He followed with his assurance that he would "continue to assist the Iraqis in the formation of a free country", a recipe for more militarism as that 'freedom' has come in the form of death, repression, and chaos for most Iraqis. It's unlikely that the average Iraqi will celebrate the feathering of their oppressors' nest, the elevation of the coddled brood. They have to be anxious about where all of the new authority's collective muscle will be exercised.

Most of the new regime's initiatives will be buttressed by whatever force the U.S. has provided them. There's little hope that there will be less of a heavy hand as the new Iraqi authority quick marches Iraqis toward whatever ambition they can collectively conceive. The focus of attention is on the bolstering of the junta now, but the people of Iraq are not invested in the mechanizations of government to the extent they can expect to effectively direct the new authority's actions. Indeed, the Bush regime and others outside of Iraq regularly expect for their own ambitions to be carried out by the purchased cabal - ignorant of the needs and concerns of any average Iraqi citizen - before they release the country from the grip of their occupying armies.

It's no wonder the violence among Iraqis hasn't subsided. We were promised that the violence would end with the formation of an Iraqi government. We needn't have waited for this day to dispel that lie. Violent attacks and reprisals, carried out by the U.S. backed Iraqi militias, as well as by other individuals and groups looking to retaliate or avenge the theft of their country, have increased and continued despite the ascendance of those who would rule them.

In January, Bush used the violence to justify our troops' continued occupation. "The enemy has one weapon - I repeat to you - and that's to shake our will," Bush said. "I just want to tell you, whether you agree with me, or not, they're not going to shake my will.

Today, he proclaimed the formation of the new Iraqi authority a "devastating defeat for terrorists". Although there have been over a thousand killings in Iraq in the last month alone, Bush still insists that the 'democracy' he imposed on Iraq with our military is some stopgap measure of his resolve. He wants us to allow him to continue the layering of lies about 'spreading democracy' and 'defeating terrorists' that he uses as the only relevant platform he can muster to lord over us, and allow him to continue to rape our Treasury for the benefit of the insatiable military industry that feeds off of his warmongering.

The formation of the Iraqi cabinet doesn't seem to be heralding any move of the U.S. troops toward home. U.S. military commanders are reportedly sending several hundred additional U.S. troops to Iraq from positions in Kuwait and elsewhere to 'bolster' the 132,000 occupying force and 'protect' the new authority.

Lt. Gen. Peter Chiarelli, the second-ranking general in Iraq, told reporters Friday that, by the end of the summer, 75% of the Iraqi army would 'take the lead' and reduce the pressure on our troops to stay. But, he warned, "They have indicated again, that through these (acts of violence) that they are going to do everything they possibly can to destabilize that government."

Would the Bush regime really walk away from Iraq, satisfied that the Iraqi troops were carrying on the 'fight against terrorists', as the violence raged on? To walk away they will have to abandon their boasts about ending the violence and rolling back the terrorist's fringe. It's clear that the last vestige of their platform of lies actually elevates the arguments for withdrawal.

In a speech on the Senate floor in April, former presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry laid out two deadlines for Iraq – if Iraqi leaders can't form a unity government by May 15, American troops should leave rather than be 'stuck in the crossfire'. A similar marker should now be laid out, resolving that American troops will not stay to defend the new authority in their further consolidation of power. The junta is already compromised to the point that their engagements will forever carry the unfair weight of the cooperative exercises of our nation's deadly forces and the military support we've provided.

"President Bush says we cannot lose our nerve in Iraq." Kerry said in his Senate speech. "But it takes more nerve to respond to mistakes than to stubbornly continue down the wrong path. Last week, Secretary Rice acknowledged thousands of mistakes in Iraq. Nobody has been held accountable for these errors, but our troops have paid the price. Yet the President continues to insist on a vague and counter-productive strategy that will keep U.S. forces in Iraq indefinitely."

"I accept my share of responsibility for the war in Iraq. he continued. "As I said in 2004, knowing what we know now, I would not have gone to war. My frustration is that many of us have offered alternatives and suggestions to correct our course in Iraq. Time after time, the Administration has ignored them."

To accept responsibility for the war in Iraq, Bush would have to admit his lies; his odious, wicked, damned lies, but, he hasn't shown any will to change. Upon our souls, he continues to lie. Upon our souls, innocents continue to die.

4. Iraqi PM vows "maximum force" as bombs kill 19
Edited on Sun May-21-06 06:37 PM by bigtree
BAGHDAD, May 21 (Reuters) - Iraq's Prime Minister Nuri al- Maliki vowed to use "maximum force against terrorism" on Sunday, as bombs killed at least 19 people in Baghdad during the first meeting of his national unity cabinet.

In a reminder of the task Maliki faces in stemming bloodshed and drawing angry, fearful Iraqis back from the brink of civil war, a suicide bomber killed at least 13 people and wounded 18 in a crowded restaurant popular with police.

A day after parliament approved the cabinet of Shi'ites, minority Sunnis and Kurds and its programme to combat violence and consolidate the U.S.-sponsored transition to democracy, U.S. President George W. Bush said the new government marked a "new day for the millions of Iraqis who want to live in freedom."

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said it was too early to commit to sending home some of the 130,000 U.S. troops and said top U.S. military commanders will meet the Iraqi government over the coming weeks to discuss the roles of Iraqi and U.S. forces.

ANALYSIS-Gaps in Iraq government offer guide to priorities

21 May 2006 16:39:25
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/MAC140758.htm

BAGHDAD, May 21 (Reuters) - Iraq's new national unity government is packed with elected leaders from almost every sectarian, ethnic and political group, but two elements that are notably missing may offer the best clues to its priorities.

One thing it still lacks is ministers for the key security posts, interior and defence; the other is a middle name.

For the first time since U.S. forces overthrew Saddam Hussein, Iraq has an administration that is not "provisional", "interim", "transitional" nor any other epithet to undermine its powers or offer excuses for inaction on issues most pressing for its 26 million people -- restoring security and the economy.

6. new line-up
FACTBOX-Key figures in Iraq new political line-up

21 May 2006
Source: Reuters

May 21 (Reuters) - Here are brief profiles of key figures in the new Iraq government as well as other Iraqi leaders.

PRIME MINISTER NURI AL-MALIKI - Maliki is a straight-talking Shi'ite Islamist from Dawa, oldest of the big parties in the dominant United Iraqi Alliance (UIA) bloc. He spent years in exile after being sentenced to death by Saddam's courts. He says he is ready to reach out to Sunni rebels and rein in Shi'ite militias. A graduate in Arabic letters, he was born in 1950.

OIL MINISTER HUSSAIN AL-SHAHRISTANI - A nuclear scientist jailed and tortured after refusing to design an atom bomb for Saddam. Shahristani is a newcomer to an oil industry he must rescue from corruption and violence. An ex-deputy parliamentary speaker, oil industry officials question his expertise.

FINANCE MINISTER BAYAN JABOR - Jabor is from the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI), the strongest Alliance component. His year as interior minister has been marred by accusations of police death squads and recruitment into the police from SCIRI's armed wing, the Badr movement. An engineer by training.

FOREIGN MINISTER HOSHIYAR ZEBARI - An increasingly recognisable figure on the world stage, the portly Kurd remains foreign minister, a post he has held since 2003. His fluent English and easy manner brought him notice as a spokesman for the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) during the guerrilla campaigns in the mountains during Saddam's time.

9. It is to the American peoples credit
their Rulers must continually lie to them in order to get them to support a war.

And it is to the American peoples shame they don't remove those Rulers who do not care what the plebes think, say or want...

13. two-plus-two equals four, not five like Bush says
"He picked up the children's history book and looked at the portrait of Big Brother which formed its frontispiece. The hypnotic eyes gazed into his own. It was as though some huge force were pressing down upon you -- something that penetrated inside your skull, battering against your brain, frightening you out of your beliefs, persuading you, almost, to deny the evidence of your senses. In the end the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it. It was inevitable that they should make that claim sooner or later: the logic of their position demanded it. Not merely the validity of experience, but the very existence of external reality, was tacitly denied by their philosophy. The heresy of heresies was common sense. And what was terrifying was not that they would kill you for thinking otherwise, but that they might be right. For, after all, how do we know that two and two make four? Or that the force of gravity works? Or that the past is unchangeable? If both the past and the external world exist only in the mind, and if the mind itself is controllable what then?

The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command. His heart sank as he thought of the enormous power arrayed against him, the ease with which any Party intellectual would overthrow him in debate, the subtle arguments which he would not be able to understand, much less answer. And yet he was in the right! They were wrong and he was right. The obvious, the silly, and the true had got to be defended. Truisms are true, hold on to that! The solid world exists, its laws do not change. Stones are hard, water is wet, objects unsupported fall towards the earth's centre. With the feeling that he was speaking to O'Brien, and also that he was setting forth an important axiom, he wrote:

Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows."

-Winston Smith in George Orwell's 1984
