Question for Lousianans about MrGO
I keep hearing about what a boondoggle this thing is and how it prevents the river from replenishing the delta & barrier islands.

It apparently costs MORE each year to maintain, than it generates in revenue, and the canals and levees are dangerous to people who live near them ..Is it possible to dismantle it and turn the river loose again? or did they build up areas that prevent this from happening?

1. there are a few businesses that use it
Edited on Sun May-21-06 03:46 PM by pitohui
mister go destroyed st. bernard parish and the good people of st. bernard want it gone so that they can rebuild their homes and not go thru this crap again, literally every residence was destroyed or severely damaged in the parish

the only impediment is the relatively few businesses that do use it as a shipping channel and who are threatening to pick up their toys and tax dollars and go elsewhere if it is removed

i'm blocking on the name of the prime offender at the moment but it'll come back to me and i'll come and edit this thread when it does

not sure why an entire parish (county) of several towns and villages should be at the mercy of a few businesses

here's a link to much more history of mr. go that you can probably read on a nice sunday afternoon:

3. the barge you are thinking of was in the industrial canal
although the confusion is understandable since industrial canal and mr. go are confluent there

perhaps the wiki guide will help orient you a little

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industrial_Canal

i have a photo of the famous barge and it appeared to have been driven over or through the levee at the industrial canal

my husband has been to the site since for business and reports the barge has since been removed, i seem to dimly recall news reports of a number of bodies, i'm thinking at least two of a young couple left behind in a house crushed by the barge were found in april or march?

however we can't do without industrial canal which joins river to lake, while we can prob. do very well indeed if not better w.out the boondoggle that is mr. go

4. They cut the barge up a couple months ago.
Bodies have been found in the Lower 9th and Chalmette in March/April/May. Here's a picture of what is very much needed for the search (end of March):

And here is why:
