ATTENTION DUers Who Post on Other Websites!!!!
Okay, this is shameless - and I admit it!

But if you regularly post on other websites, I am hoping to spread the word across the internet about the BILLION DOLLAR US Embassy currently being constructed in Baghdad -- an insult to the people of Iraq being perpetrated, of course, at the taxpayers' expense.

Please go to:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x2637379

Hopefully, you will join us in this LET EVERYONE KNOW project.

No 'recommends' are necessary, but your help is.

(Please?)

Obviously Not-To-Proud-To-Beg,
Nancy Greggs

9. Thanks for the info, MMA!
This story, outrageous as it is in and of itself, will be another nail in the GOP coffin in November.

I want to see the Repubs who voted for this appopriation of funds to explain to the parents of dead or wounded soldiers who were denied $700 worth of body armor WHY these funds were available. Add in the Katrina victims who are still homeless, and the veterans whose benefits were just slashed again!

16. This is how it is posted on the usgovinfo site
There are a couple of ways you can look at the new $600 million, 21 building U.S. embassy now being built on 104 US-owned acres of land deep in the heart of Baghdad, Iraq.

Like Liberal Politics Guide Deborah White, you can look at the largest embassy ever built by anybody, anywhere in the world, and designed to house 8,000 US staff workers as "an American embassy-palace the likes of which the world has never before seen -- larger and more lavish than Hussein's palaces."

Or, you can look at the campus featuring tennis courts, a movie theater and the largest swimming pool in all of Iraq, like State Department spokesman Justin Higgins, as quoted on FOXNews.com, who finds, "The size of the embassy is in keeping with the goals of we have set for Iraq." Or like Sen. Richard Lugar's (R-Indiana) spokesman Andy Fisher, who told FOXnews.com, "There is a requirement for that kind of presence at this time in Iraq."

http://usgovinfo.about.com/b/a/217176.htm

First the $600 million number is wrong, isn't it $7b? And what is this "goals set for Iraq business?

18. Exactly!
According to the Idiot-in-Chief, the 'goals' set for Iraq were to rebuild schools, hospitals, water treatment facilities, a new electrical grid, et cetera.

Instead, the Iraqi people are getting another (but bigger and more lavish) reminder of the type of regime US soldiers died to 'liberate' them from.

And just to pile on ANOTHER thing that outrages me about all of this is the 'These are not funds allocated to rebuilding Iraq, but were appropriated in an emergency session of Congress' bullshit.

Yeah, like if you steal ten bucks out of pocket, it's somehow DIFFERENT than stealing it out of my purse!

MONEY IS MONEY -- and every cent they're spending belongs to the AMERICAN PEOPLE. Which account you steal it from is of no consequence.

21. Thanks so much, catchawave!!!!
I guess Saddam's existent palaces were just too humble and under-stated!

As they say, those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

I wonder if anyone from this Administration ever saw the photos of the Ipatiev House, where Czar Nicholas and his family wound up living out their (numbered) days, when the people they 'ruled' had had enough.

I wonder if Rummy has revisited those clips of Iraqis looting government buildings -- you know, the 'Democracy is untidy' footage -- and wondered what he will say when this 'embassy' meets with the same fate?

Just wonderin' ...

29. I just visited your thread on this topic, LibertyOrDeath ...
... and I was too upset to K & R, which I will go back and do immediately.

The topic of TORTURE has been my number one issue for a long time, as per:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x2605581

The only reason I started this Embassy thing is because I KNOW it will outrage so many US citizens, which could help turn the tide against the GOP in November.

But on a personal level, it continues to astound me that ordinary citizens weren't OUTRAGED enough by the torture issue -- including the pseudo-Christians who proudly continue their support of the Bush regime in spite of what they have seen, read and heard on this topic.

The "torture-toll", if you will, will be felt for years to come. It will continue to turn the people of the Middle East against Americans; it will haunt the US soldiers who participated in it for the rest of their lives, which, in turn, will haunt the lives of their families, their spouses and their children. Add to that the US soldiers around the world who will suffer the same fate, because this Administration has declared the Geneva Conventions no longer valid during times of conflict.

WE ARE AMERICANS, and we have traditionally valued our status as being 'above' the things our enemies are willing to stoop to. Our credibility on this issue is forever tarnished, and we will suffer the consequences of this Administration's blood-thirst for generations to come.

I HAVE TO BELIEVE that karma, the justice of God (whatever you wish to call it) will eventually turn its wrath against those responsible.

I HAVE TO BELIEVE ... because it's the only thing that keeps me sane in the madness these people have unleashed.

Amazing how they can install water treatment facilities for the future embassy, but Halliburton can only seem to supply contaminated water for the troops to shower in and brush their teeth with.

32. Yuppers, a 104-acre, 21-building complex ...
... will be SO EASY to safeguard.

I hope they've included a holding room for all of the 'sweets and flowers' the Iraqis will be sending - you know, the people who will be visiting the embassy just so they can be reminded of what it was like to have clean water and electricity.

Do I prefer that our personnel be taken hostage? No, I prefer that our personnel get their asses out of there.
